Gwulo book news

The printer has finished printing all the sheets for the new book's pages, and I've been given a set to look over - here's one of them:

Printer's sheet for Volume 2

They all look good, so thanks to Lilly for preparing an attractive layout and tuning the images, and to Suk Woon for working with the printing company's technicians to get the best results.

The sheets still need to be cut, folded, and bound before I can hold a finished book. And one other thing I've learned this time round is that we also have to wait for boxes to be made - each set of books the printer deals with are a different size and shape, so a new set of cardboard boxes must be made each time.

But we're getting close, and I'm told to expect the books to be delivered on "the last few days of November, or the first few days of December". That means it's time to think about the pre-launch offer. I'll post up details of the offer later this week.

There's also a chance to win free copies of both the Gwulo books, volumes 1 & 2 - for details please listen to the recording of this week's Hong Kong Heritage show with Annemarie Evans. Annemarie kindly invited me on to her show, and at the end of our chat we explained the competition's details. Please send your answer to Annemarie at hkhradio3@gmail.com (We chatted about collecting old Hong Kong photos, and how I go about telling their stories. We then looked at a few example photos from Volumes 1 & 2 of the Gwulo book. The last photo gave us a chance to walk up to Cornwall Street and take a look at a piece of Kowloon's hidden history, the old Beacon Hill tunnel.)

  • Last night was Barbara Anslow's talk to the Hong Kong Society in London. Patricia O'Sullivan was there, and writes:
    • Barbara gave a bravura performance that received a well deserved standing ovation.  I was told by the recent chair of the HK Society that he couldn't remember a more packed talk. Barbara held us rapt and the questions could have gone on a lot longer but dinner called!

  • Lots more history of HMS Tamar, with a suggestion the name may have been attached to a Japanese vessel for a short while after the end of WW2.
  • Free talk on 13th December 2018: The Photographic Journeys of John Thomson. I've already signed up - hope to see you there!
