New York Cinema (Causeway Bay Plaza) / 紐約戲院 [1992-2006]

Seating capacity: 2 screens, total 701.

Address: 463-483 Lockhart Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

New York Cinema was located in the Causeway Bay Plaza 2, on the northwest corner of Lockhart Road and Percival Street.  It operated during the period July 4, 1992 - March 16, 2006.

Ritz Theatre (see separate place-page listed below) operated from March 30, 1953 to June 1, 1972 and soon after that the site was re-developed for commercial purposes.  For simplicity, the discussion on this page covers several cinemas that used the same building prior to the re-development for Ritz.  The write-up is a blend of information from several sources including the place-page for the Ritz Theatre.

MCL JP Cinema / MCL 銅鑼灣戲院 [1999-2017]

Address: 22-36 Paterson Street, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

MCL JP Cinema was the successor to the former Jade Theatre and Pearl Theatre [1969-1998].  After an extensive reconstruction to the interior of the building, redecoration, and installation of the morden technology, the cinema started operating on July 13, 1999.  The cinema closed on April 18, 2017.

Paramount Cinema (north Mong Kok) / 百樂門戲院 [????-????]

Address: 221-225 Sai Yeung Choi Street North, Shop A, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

Not to be confused with another bigger and more well-known Paramount Theatre [1954-1972] also in Mong Kok on Shan Tung Street  - https://gwulo.com/node/36552, this theatre was  converted from a shop in the 1990s.  Very limited information has been identified thus far, and its operating period is still not known at this time.  It is possible its name was Paramount Cinema (confirmed May 4).

Golden Gateway Multiplex / 嘉禾港威電影城 [1995-2016]

Address: 25 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong

Golden Gateway Multiplex was on the ground floor of The Gateway in Tsim Sha Tsui.  It started operating on April 14, 1995.  In 2011, one screen was removed reducing the total capacity to 610.  The cinema was permanently closed on February 15, 2016 when the lease expired.

Address: 380 Nathan Road, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Astor Classics Cinema operated its two auditoriums in the Eaton Hotel which was built on the site of the Former Astor Theatre.  The same Chinese name has been used by all successive theatres at the same site.  It operated during the period September 8, 1990 - March 1, 2000.

Great Wall Movie Enterprises, Ltd.* was one of several companies that operated in Kowloon City.   According to Wikipedia, it was founded in 1948.  Its first film was released in January 1950*.

Wikipedia source: "In 1982, Great Wall merged with Feng Huang, Chung Yuen and Sun Luen Film Company as Sil-Metrople Organization."  As such, operation under the name Great Wall was considered to have ended in 1982. 

The location marker on this page has been determined using Gwulo's 1956 Kowloon Map which shows the site of the studio.

Tai Ping Theatre (1st generation) [1904-1930]

The Heritage Museum say it was it was built in 1904:

Erected between Queen’s Road West and Des Voeux Road West in Western
District in 1904, the three-storey Tai Ping Theatre accommodated over
1,000 seats and was one of the most well-established theatres in early 20th
century Hong Kong.
