Scala Theatre / 帝后戲院 [1975-1991]

Submitted by OldTimer on Thu, 02/09/2017 - 03:19

Seating capacity: 476

Address:  1 Hing Wo Street, Tin Wan, Hong Kong.  The building remains standing today, and has been converted to a church.

Scala Theatre operated during the period May 1, 1975 - January 3, 1991.

I looked up Scala and the closest I think is a Latin word for a ladderlike structure.  The  Chinese name is a classical term meaning the wife of a king/emperior.

Royal Cinema (Mong Kok) / 太子戲院 [1992-2007]

Submitted by OldTimer on Tue, 02/07/2017 - 05:49

Seating capacity: 121

Address: 221 Sai Yeung Choi Street North, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong.  園景大廈地下商鋪 (Gardenview Building) is the present occupant at the site.

The theatre's name was likely chosen for its close proximity to Prince Edward Road.

Royal Cinema occupied a unit that was at one time a garage at street level, hence the small seating capacity.   The sources listed below show two different opening dates - February 12, 1992 and December 2, 1992 (selected).  Both stated that it was closed sometime in February 2007.

Riviera Theatre (Tsuen Wan) / 海濱戲院 [1991-2011]

Submitted by OldTimer on Tue, 02/07/2017 - 04:25

Seating capacity: 461

Information gathered thus far from the internet turned out to be very limited.  Riviera Theatre was located somewhere in the Riviera Gardens in Tsuen Wan.  The area is now fairly saturated with residential and commercial buildings and land reclamation continues.  The theatre was likely located close to the water given its name.  The location marker is approximate.
