Prince's Theatre / 柬樂戲院 [1931-1970]

Submitted by OldTimer on Mon, 02/06/2017 - 05:14

Seating capacity: 1,957.   Address: 760 Nathan Road, Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong.  Allied Plaza is the current occupant at the site.

As with some theatres, the English name of this theatre bears no resemblance in sound or meaning to its Chinese name.  柬樂 can be translated to East Joy/Happiness.  The theatre sat on prime location visible to traffic and pedestrians along the busy Nathan Road.  At one time its closest neighbour was a nullah which I believe still is except it is now covered by the roadway.

Po Wah Theatre (Tai Po) / 寶華戲院 [1967-1995]

Submitted by OldTimer on Sun, 02/05/2017 - 11:05

There were two theatres in Tai Po with the same name - Po Wah Theatres 寶華戲院 -  operating in different periods and locations. Information on both theatres is limited, however, this page attempts to summarize what is available.

The first Po Wah Theatre opened for business on February 1, 1967, but its closing date is unknown and so too is its seating capacity.  It was located on Nam Shing Street 大埔墟南盛街街口 at the corner with either On Fu Road or Po Heung Street.

Pearl Theatre (Aberdeen) / 明珠戲院 [1953-1970]

Submitted by OldTimer on Sun, 02/05/2017 - 09:45

Seating capacity: 600.  Address: 31 Ap Lei Chau Main Street, Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong

The theatre started operating on April 25, 1953 and was named in Chinese only - likely 明園戲院 (meaning bright garden) and its Cantonese pronounciation would sound like Ming Yuen.  On May 20, 1956 it was renamed Pearl Theatre and its Chinese name changed to 明珠戲院 (meaning bright pearl).

The theatre was closed some time in the late 1960s or early 1970s.  For the purpose of this page, the closing date is estimated to be January 1970.
