Cameron Arthur CARTER [1894-1987]

Cameron Arthur Carter and his wife, Mabel were American missionaries and Seventh-day Adventists. They sailed to China in 1922 and worked in different parts of the country during their long and illustrious career. 

In August 1938, the Carters arrived in Hong Kong. Cameron A. Carter began working for the China Training Institute that had opened a temporary school in Sha Tin whilst a permanent school was being constructed in Clearwater Bay. In 1939, he became President of the new campus. In May 1941, Mabel and their daughter had left for the United States, leaving Carter behind.

Mary Darling CARMAN (née BIRD) [1895-1952]

Mary Carman was the wife of William Floyd Carman. Her spouse had been working for Marsman, Hong Kong, China Ltd., at the time of the Japanese invasion.

They were interned at Stanley Camp and repatriated with other Americans in 1942. Prior to departure on the voyage home on the Gripsholm, the couple reunited with their son who had arrived on the Conte Verde and had been studying in Shanghai when war broke out.

Mary Carman and her husband died together in January 1952 in an unfortunate accident of carbon monoxide poisoning in their New York City apartment.

William Floyd CARMAN [1893-1952]

W. F. Carman was Acting Managing Director of Marsman, Hong Kong, China Ltd., which had a contract with the Hong Kong Government to build air raid tunnels and shelters. He gave evidence at the A. R. P. Commission of Inquiry held in 1941.

He and his wife were interned at Stanley Camp and repatriated with other Americans in 1942. Prior to departure on the voyage home on the Gripsholm, the couple reunited with their son who had arrived on another exchange ship and been studying in Shanghai when war broke out.

Ralph Dustin BULLOCK [1892-????]

Rev. Ralph Dustin Bullock was an American interdenominational missionary and pastor. He arrived in Hong Kong in the 1930s and was connected to several churches and also supervised a bible school. Rev. Bullock wrote articles and newsletters and for the "Oriental Pentecost", a magazine devoted to the Pentecostal Church in South China.

Jane Bartlett BROWNELL (née MENUT) [1886-1977]

Jane Bartlett Menut and her husband, Professor Henry Chase Brownell had been connected with Lingnan University in Canton (Guangzhou) since 1908. Their association with the University continued into post-war. Her husband was Professor of History and also the Dean of Men whilst she served as the Dean of Women.

Nathan Falcon BREWER [1891-1959]

Nathan F. Brewer was an American missionary of the Seventh-day Adventist Denomination. He and his wife were sent to China and by 1916 were serving the mission in Nanking (Nanjing).

N. F. Brewer was also the former president of the China Division of Adventists and was visiting Hong Kong at the time of the Japanese attack. He was interned in Stanley Camp and repatriated with other Americans in 1942.
