W. F. Carman was Acting Managing Director of Marsman, Hong Kong, China Ltd., which had a contract with the Hong Kong Government to build air raid tunnels and shelters. He gave evidence at the A. R. P. Commission of Inquiry held in 1941.
He and his wife were interned at Stanley Camp and repatriated with other Americans in 1942. Prior to departure on the voyage home on the Gripsholm, the couple reunited with their son who had arrived on another exchange ship and been studying in Shanghai when war broke out.
Carman and his wife died together in January 1952 in an unfortunate accident of carbon monoxide poisoning in their New York City apartment.
