Free copies of the Gwulo books, Volumes 1 & 2 !

Submitted by David on

Thanks to Annemarie Evans for inviting me on to her RTHK show, Hong Kong Heritage, for a chat about old photos of Hong Kong, and a visit to a piece of Kowloon's hidden history.

We finished up with a competition to win copies of both of the Gwulo books: last year’s Volume 1, and the new Volume 2 which will be published later this month. For details of how to enter, please listen to this week’s show at the link below (our chat begins at the 01:15 mark):

Submitted by Philip on

I am looking for information on a house by the name of Casa Bianca which was reported to be near Deep Water Bay. It was commandeered by the Army in December 1941. It was used for a while by Canadian Signals detachment after the evacuation of the Mainland. Philip

Castle Peak Hotel?

Submitted by michaellau on

Hi all, I am helping on a research project for identifying places in old Hong Kong films before 1970. I came across a film in which the character claims a place to be Castle Peak Hotel but I cannot find any photo/video to confirm the location. The film is called The Blessed Family (合家有喜 in Chinese) released in 1959, it could be watched at YouTube (as shown below) and the segment showing the place is from 1:02:40 to 1:08:27.

Russian Autumn Culture Festival HK - White Russians in HK

Submitted by patricia on

I've just attended the opening of this exhibition in 7 Mallory Street in Wanchai - 3rd floor.  Its a small exhibition devoted partly to the work on Savitsky and others, with input from some of those with White Russian HK heritage.  A lot is in Russian, but Irina, Kira and the other contributors are on hand to  explain it all.  And then I found quotes from Gwulo on Russian restaurants in HK! ... but they hadn't known how to advertise there event here.

21 Oct 2018 - Gwulo server crashed

Submitted by Admin on

At about midday today (Hong Kong time), the server hosting the Gwulo website crashed. It restarted automatically, but the databases wouldn't load.

The hosting company ran into several problems getting the databases working again, but think they have everything fixed now.

If you spot any missing content, or problems with the website, please let me know.
