SCMP archives

Submitted by JohnA on

Has anyone tried to access the SCMP archive recently?

There used to be a link at the bottom of their website to the archive where you could do a basic search then buy a daily subscription to get full access. It was very handy as the word search was extremely good and accurate.

The link now only seems to apply to archives of the last three years. I am looking for issues in the early 1950s.

I have emailed them a couple of times to no avail. Not even an acknowledgement.

Thanks

ICAC in the 70's - particularly the Godber / Hunt cases

Submitted by Kp on

Hello - I am Karen Penlington (now Luard), daughter of Ross Penlington who was DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions in HK in the mid-70's and prosecuted both Peter Godber and Ernest 'Taffy' Hunt in 1974)...I am researching a book on the establishment of the ICAC in the 70's and would be very interested to talk to anyone in relevant government departments -  police force/public works department/legal department - in the 70's and 80's who observed or has a first-hand experience - or a credible opinion - of what it was to operate in HK pre and post the early days of the setting

Any information on 'Commercial Bank Buildngs, Queens Road', 1868?

Submitted by angelac on

Hello!

I am looking for building called that was called the 'Commercial Bank building' which was on Queens Road somewhere in 1868. I have had no luck finding this building. There appear to be many companies in the 1860's in Hong Kong that had the word 'Commercial' in their name, but so far I haven't been able to find a building that had this specific title, I'm looking for the building where John Thomson, the photographer, first rented rooms in Hong Kong in 1868.

J.J. (Jack) English, Senior Superintendent RHKP - CID/Kowloon

Submitted by KarlEnglish on

I am doing some research into the circumstances concerning the suicide of Senior Superintendent JJ (Jack) English CID/K in June 1976. He was found dead in the old Marine Police HQ building in Tsimshatsui in the early hours of 12 June 1976. I am his elder son. The purpose for this research is to inform the surviving members of the family of what happened, why it happened and any fall out following his death. His wife and my mother, Kim English never discussed it with her sons and it was only after her death last year that I started this project.

Tai Pak amusement park

Submitted by bowulf on

In his book Streets: Exploring HK Island Jason Wordie notes about Li Po Lung Path in Kennedy Town that the small street is named after the Chinese entrepreneur Li Po Lung, who also established an amusement park (Tai Pak Yau Lok Cheung) in the area, that is on the hillside above Belcher's Street. Is anything else known about this entrepreneur and his amusement park? Do we have any pictures of the park?

I have searched this site, but have not found anything on the subject. Sorry if I have missed something

St. Johns Hospital Cheung Chan 1934

Submitted by 2ik7ns-AW_ on

Can I thank the Gwulo community for identifying my incorrectly title post for the Hospital.

I have recently discovered one or two postcards with Hong Kong written on the back and some old photographs.

I am not aware of the origins of the collection but had assumed that they might all be of Hong Kong. I shall upload

a few more pictures to the site shortly. I hope these will be of interest and possibly the community might be able to identify some of them.
