Hong Kong slides

Submitted by IngridMason on

Hi there

I have inherited a range of photos, slides and postcards from my grandfather's collection.  I don't have the equipment or time  to upload them.  Can I send them on to someone who is interested?
Grandpa was called Edward Poulson.  He worked for Hong Kong Electrical Company from the 40's to 60's and was a Grand Poobah of the Masonic Club.
Thank you

Edith Carlotta Johnson-Lee Gegg Ainslie

Submitted by D-O-G@88@89 on

Does anyone have information about my grandmother, Edith Carlotta Gegg Ainslie.   We know that she and her two sisters were born in Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain.  She was born in 1882.  We don't yet know the names of her parents, but believe that her father had the last name of Johnson Lee which was the maiden name of Edith and her two sisters, Agnes and Bertha.  My father is William Gegg. He was born in Hong kong in 1920.  Both he and his mother, Edith, were interned in POW camps during WWII.

Last Broadcast before capitulation and first one after liberation

Submitted by AL on

I was thinking about how people could communicate before the internet and one question just popped into my head: what was the last broadcast from any radio in Hong Kong like before the capitulation? I dug in and found nothing related to the soundtrack. I wonder if that still exists. The latter part is the extension of the question.

It would be great if I could have some insights on how to find the answer!

Ship breaking yard.

Submitted by teejay on

I was with 54 Ind RE from 1959 to 1960. One of my duties, as a driver, was to transport LOPs ( living out personnel) from Tai Lam to Kowloon every night and back to camp next morning. I have recollections of seeing ships being broken in a bay on the way down. I have not been able to work out where this was. Anyone got any ideas?

Floor plan of old HK "estate" housing

Submitted by albertng on

Does anyone have old floorplans of Hong Kong's estate housing that were built in the 50s/60s?

Context:

  • I'm having trouble describing to my kids how bare bones (by today's standards) the living space was in those govt estates. Having a floor plan will help
  • I myself lived in North Point Estate in the 70s. It was palatial compared to where my relatives lived in Ho Man Tin Estate and others on Kowloon
  • I'm thinking of buildings like this: https://gwulo.com/media/52145

Thank you.
