When was ice cream first sold in Hong Kong?

Submitted by eurasian_david on

Summer is here and the perennial favourite ice cream is on all minds, young and old. But when was ice cream first sold in Hong Kong?

I tried Google AI and got this answer:

Ice cream was first sold in Hong Kong in 1921 by On Lok Yuen, a Western-style cafe chain that established the city's first ice cream factory, according to the South China Morning Post. They imported ingredients like skimmed milk powder and canned butter from Australia to make their ice cream.

videos about Hong Kong 1930s : look back from 2020s

Submitted by hkspace_wl on

Topical documentaries about 1930s Hong Kong appear not common in the public domain.
The 'Historical Time and Space' (歷史時空) facebook hosted by the late Wai Tse have shared few informative ones, with own annotation, enhancements and present day photos.
Possibly, some of them he acquired from overseas ? They appear not generally available on youtube before he shared on FB posts.

Ying Wa Boys School - Enrolment lists 19th century around 1850s

Submitted by LynH on

Greetings learned ones ,

Does anyone know where the enrollment lists might be published for the above school ? I suspect that a great great uncle may have been a graduate given the backstory of his life as much ,as we know, which seems to mirror some of the information relating to graduates published by Wong Man Kong of the Hong Kong Baptist University in recent publications..

The Japanese-built Tower of Patriotic Souls in Hong Kong...

Submitted by lolittaho on

The Tower of Patriotic Souls (loosely translated) is situated on a knoll in Kowloon, near Kowloon Hospital.

When the Japanese troops invaded and dominated Kowloon for a short time, they built a monument to pay tribute to the Japanese soldiers who had lost their lives in the war.  Today it still stands, though long forgotten and tucked away in a corner of Kowloon Hospital, now a government hospital.  It is apparently similar to another tower on Hong Kong island, and was built to commemorate the Japanese war dead.

Photos of the construction of the Peak Tram

Submitted by danielwettling on

Hello,

I have lived in Hong Kong for 40 years, and we have done lots of research on old Hong Kong, but we never came across photographs of the construction of the peak tram. For example, the digging and blasting of rocks, the layout of the tracks etc.

There are photographs of the Stanley road construction which was completed in 1919.

Looking forward to your reply and thank you very much. Have a pleasant week.   Daniel
