New on Gwulo: 2019, week 01

Submitted by David on

I've just learned that, according to the ISO standard, the first week of the year is the week that has the year's first Thursday. So despite the title above, it's still the 31st of December, and I'm writing our last roundup of what's new for 2018.

I hope you've enjoyed reading all the contributions to Gwulo over the last year, and wish you all the best for the new year ahead,

David

Carl Smith Cards from PRO - now with Card images

Submitted by patricia on

Have I missed something and people have been celebrating this little Christmas present from the HK PRO for weeks? ... but they have had a revamp of their website recently, I think.  Nothing much new in terms of the general catalogue (the HKRS series and the like), but now, oh bliss, the Carl Smith index comes with a thumbnail of the card itself.  When clicked this comes up separately and can be made full screen or screenshot.  Both sides of the card are available when appropriate.

New link to access the Carl Smith Collection?

Submitted by jill on

David, do you know the latest link to access the Carl Smith Collection at the PRO? The one that you gave in 2011 isn't working any more  http://search.grs.gov.hk/PRO/srch/english/sys_carlsmith.jsp?language=eng

I'm sure I've seen a post mentioning difficulties and giving the latest method of access, but I can't find it at the moment. Grateful for help.

Peak Tram Bridges

Submitted by Klaus on

In the Journal from 1888 it is reported that there are eleven bridges on the Peak Tram. Two of them are over roads, and the rest over nullahs and gaps. In the beginning, two road bridges over the tram were built (Bowen Road, a bit later Macdonnell Road). In 1907, the May Road bridge was built, and in 1968, the Cotton Tree Drive bridge was added.

So, let’s start at the lower terminus.

Gwulo meet-up 27th Dec. 2018

Submitted by C on

The Christmas gathering of Gwulo members one year ago was a success. I wonder if fellow members are interested to get together again this year. I suggest going to the same venue -- Dickens Bar inside the Excelsior Hotel -- one last time before the hotel closes next year. Would the evening of Thursday, 27th December 2018 be okay?

Franklin Gimson in August 1945

Submitted by brian edgar on

I've completely re-written the sections of the Stanley Camp Chronology that deal with Franklin Gimson's actions after the Japanese surrender - from August 18th  to September 1st 1945. Further research has persuaded me that the usual account of these events, which I had previously accepted, is based on unreliable sources. My new version is by no means definitive, though: even the best sources are incomplete and full of contradictions and downright errors.
