1970s kindergarten - Sandlin?

Submitted by samantha on

Hello, I am wondering if anybody can help me track down the location of the English-speaking kindergarten that I went to in the mid-late 1970s. I'm pretty sure it was called Sandlin, and I lived in the mid-levels but it may have been closer to the harbour or a bit further east. The only thing I really remember about it is the steep staircase which led down to it - which probably doesn't narrow it down much in this area!

Industrial heritage in Hong Kong

Submitted by LizB on

I am putting together a list of past industrial sites (and some present ones) in Hong Kong, with links to the relevant Gwulo pages (or if there is no dedicated Gwulo page for them yet, Public Works Department Annual Reports). There is already a very comprehensive list on the Industrial History of Hong Kong website - my list is just trying to group together relevant Gwulo pages and PWD sources.  For now, I have not included sites such as godowns, wharves, piers, electricity substations, etc as they are so numerous that it would be a time-consuming task.

1960s-1970s Matchbox Collection

Submitted by moddsey on

Time permitting, I will be adding matchbox covers/labels of hotels, bars, restaurants, places of entertainment, airlines, etc that have been collected from the 1960s. The collection captures the establishments that were around at the time, the Wanchai and Tsim Sha Tsui bar scene and more importantly provides an insight into a long lost era. Former hotel, nightclub and bar scene as mentioned here Enjoy!

Dear reader,

While compiling information for my book "Charles in Shanghai", many photos were shared with me, including photos from Hong Kong of the 1900s-1930s. You can find these at my page at Flickr.com.

Submitted by Fiona Craig on

Interested in any information relating to my great-great grandfather, Andrew Johnston, as above.  He served his apprenticeship in Govan, Scotland, moved to China to work in 1867, subsequently moving to Hong Kong in 1875.  From 1875 - 1881 he was Manager of the West Point Foundry and Superintendent Engineer of the Cosmopolitan Dock Company.  From 1881 to 1886 he was Manager of the Lee Yuen Sugar Refinery (he is mentioned in Kaori Abe's book "Chinese Middlemen..", Routledge 2017).

Gwulo in London: Talk on Saturday, 30th March, 2019

Submitted by David on

I'll present talk #4 to the Friends of the RASHKB in London at the end of March. Non-members are very welcome to attend.

I'll use the projector to show a selection of old Hong Kong photos from my collection onscreen, and tell their stories. The photos have been scanned at high-resolution so I can zoom in to them during the talk and show you their hidden details.

This talk's photos and stories are grouped around four themes:
