The Carl Smith Collection

... is a very useful tool to help researcher identify basic data and sources of information on individuals, organizations, buildings, roads, land matters and important events relating to Hong Kong, Macau and China's coastal cities from the mid 19th century onward.

The Public Records Office allows the collection to be searched online at: https://search.grs.gov.hk/en/searchcarladv.xhtml?rpp=10

Has anyone any knowledge of any relations of William Lysaught (1835-1910), born Co. Cork, Ireland, died HK, Inspector Naval Dockyard Police HK, and owner of W. Lysaught & Sons Machinery godown in Wanchai.

His daughters married Ramsey, Gibson, Cattaneo, step son Henry Dixon of Post Office, and son John Joseph married Norah Murphy, also of Co. Cork.

He, and a lot of the family are buried in St Michael's.

Earliest access to Repulse Bay

Submitted by David on

A question from 'The Relic':

Can anyone date the completion of road sections that eventually led to Repulse Bay? What sections were completed first? Island Road, Stubbs Road, Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, Repulse Bay Road, etc. Thanks.

If you're in Hong Kong, I'd suggest looking through old maps of Hong Kong to see when the different sections appear. There are some more suggestions about getting answers here.

Hongkong's Irish Policemen - talk this evening, Monday, 24th Jan 2011

Submitted by David on

Next Monday evening there's an RAS (Royal Asiatic Society) talk. You may recognise the speaker, Ms Patricia O'Sullivan. She's asked a couple of questions on Gwulo's forum, and also helped typing up the 1905 Jurors list.

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend, but the talk looks interesting. Here's the RAS announcement:

Help identifying old house in 1978 TV series

Submitted by Compradore on

I have always wondered about an old house used in a 1978 TVB series.  The 100+ episode series was called 強人 and it starred Chow Yun Fat and Paul Chu Kong as his brother.  One of my favorite actors, the legendary Shek Kin, was at his villanous best as their rich tycoon uncle.

The theme song for the series was sung by Roman Tam.  I recall seeing a music video for the song and I think it might have been filmed on the grounds of the same house.

"Error loading Zoomify"

[Posted here in case anyone else has the same problem]

Richard reports:

I am having trouble viewing images on the gwulo web site ........... I always get a message saying that there is an error loading Zoomify. Is this because I may have an outdated web browser ?

It might be the browser. It might also a problem with Adobe Flash, since Zoomify needs Flash to run.

So, the first few questions:

1. Has Zoomify recently stopped working for you, or has it never worked?
