Peak School Centenary 1911-2011

Submitted by viemmett on

In 2011 Peak School celebrates its centenary and the school has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the drawing room of a house on the Peak in 1911.  To mark this special occasion, Peak School is planning a series of events over the year for students, parents, alumni and staff.  We are also keen to contact alumni, parents of alumni, former staff and former and current Peak residents to gain a greater insight into the history of Peak School and Peak-living over the last 100 years.

Real Tennis

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Does anyone know if there has ever been a real tennis court set up in Hong Kong ?

'Real tennis', I mean, as opposed to lawn tennis - you know, the sort that King Henry VIII played at Hampton Court, and still has quite a following today - a growing following in fact.

I know that there isn't a court at the moment, but wonder if anyone in the dim and distant past (probably pre-1997) managed to get a venue converted for a match, however temporarily.

Any info gratefully received ! Thanks

Plans of Old Buildings

Submitted by David on

In a recent question about 14 Conduit Road, Alfred asked if there was a way to get floor plans of the old building. Originally I said no, but then I remembered this comment on the Peak Mansions thread, where Andrew wrote:

Believe it or not, I have architectural plans for Peak Mansions. I obtained them from those lovely people at the Architectural Services Dept of the HK Govt, who still had them on microfiche even though poor old PM was knocked down years ago.

Aberdeen Harbour 1930s

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I am looking at a photo of Aberdeen Harbour, taken in the 1930s, in the book 'Earth Then and Now: Amazing Images of Our Changing World'. On a hillside is a magnificent building, very long, with prominent end structures. The middle seems to be fronted by a long arcade or veranda.  I'm curious what it was - perhaps a hotel?

Hong Kong's Public Enquiry Service

A service, believed to the unique insouth-East Asia, is now operating in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong.  There, any of the Colony's 3,600,000 people can take their problems to a Government sponsored Public Enquiry Services where their questions will be answered in confidence.

St. Eligius' Church, Gun Club Hill Barracks

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Does anyone know where further information may be obtained concerning the former St. Eligius' Church, located at Gun Club Hill Barracks which was demolished in the early 1990s to make way for the new military hospital on the site.

Any photos would be great.  Any details as to church denomination, consecration etc... would also be great.  I understand that it was the garrison church for the Hong Kong garrison - does anyone know if this was the case in fact, or perhaps it was only in respect of troops based Kowloon side.

Many thanks for any information available.

Ladies Directory 1907

Submitted by annelisec on

I'm only half way through entering the data for the 1907 Ladies' Directory.  So  far I've only included the addresses, not the ladies names, but there were so many interesting things that I decided to post it.

Macdonnell Road and Kennedy Roads are well developed - with lots of house names I've never seen before.

Kowloon is also better developed, and Victoria View is listed on Garden Road, not Hankow Road.

An an intriguing building on Kennedy Road - Tang Yuen.  (Tang Garden?) Now which Tang would that be ?
