Hong Kong in the 1960's with the Welch Regiment

Submitted by Marty772 on

Hi, my Dad served with the 1stBattalion Welch Regt & was sent out to Hong Kong with the advance party in 1966. later that year I remember travelling out with my Mum & two other brothers. Dad told me many stories that happened out there during his tour! Including the monsoon's, fire at the base of our flats. The problems with the far right groups & the ever imposing threat of invasion by China. My Dad's name is Thomas George Owens. he was a Corporal in the 1s tBattalion. I think we left Hong Kong in 1967 as my mother was increasingly concerned for us boys.

Gwulo dinner on Thursday with Bill Griffiths

Submitted by David on

I'm meeting Bill Griffiths for dinner this Thursday, 13th. Please come along and join us if you're free that evening.

Bill shared the story of his late wife's sharpshooting skills earlier this year (see http://gwulo.com/node/11657), and also his time playing with some of the local bands in the 1950s (see http://gwulo.com/node/11581). Bill is visiting Hong Kong for two weeks.

Macau WW2 - death certficate search

Submitted by cheufay on

I know this site is focused mainly on HK, but as there doesn't seem to be an equivalent for all things Macanese, I'll give it a try:

I'm trying to find out how I can obtain the death certificate of a great-uncle who was a Hong Kong resident who died in Macau during WW2. Even though he was buried in HK, I'm assuming that his certificate would have been issued in Macau.

I've tried to look on the Macao government site and on the Macao HistoricalArchives site, to no avail.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Requesting interviews for HKU Project

Submitted by ruey_hku on
Hi everyone,
I am graduate student of the journalist school at the University of Hong Kong. We find this website of local history fanatics to be really interesting.
We are doing a feature story for a project that touches on people enthusiastic about learning and conserving local history. The fun and rewarding parts as well as the challenges in a modern economy and financial hub such as HK.
We are actually looking for history enthusiasts to interview so pls drop me an email if you're agreeable. I would be most grateful.

Lung Fu Shan Country Park Morning Walkers' Association

Submitted by David on

This is a good group to know about if you're interested in the Lung Fu Shan / Mount Davis Area, including the Cheng Po Tsai path that runs along there.

As their name suggests they walk the hillsides, and are also interested in the history of the area. The founder is a Mr Chan. Most mornings at around 10am he's at the flat area next to Planting Site No. 1, having tea with his friends. You can also visit their website at;

Old HK Tram Prints

Submitted by JD on

Hi im trying to get some prints. Some of the ones on this site are really lovely and I'd love to get large prints done for my dad. Preferably for christmas. Anyone know where I can get them from? I especially love the Des Voeux Rd pic with all the people queueing up in the rain. I noticed the shop link but there were only 3 tram prints there and I wasnt especially taken by them. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

It mentioned that "the larger West End Park on Seymour road was suggested as an alternative site" of hku.

But i am wonder if the west end park should be located at park road instead or there is two west end park at that time?

Anyone has any idea?
