Diocesan Girls' School Church in 1890s

Submitted by jill on

I'd be grateful to know if the Diocesan Girls' School was associated with a particular church in the 1890s. I'm looking for a marriage record of my grandmother, who attended the school, and also a christening record of her first child. Her subsequent children were baptised into the Catholic church, as my grandfather converted to the Roman Catholic faith. I have already eliminated St John's.

Wedding of Helen Walker Wylie and James Herbert Swan Duncan June 1936

Submitted by Philip on

The wedding of Miss Helen Walker Wylie and Mr James Herbert Swan Duncan took place on Friday 19th June 1936 at the Kowloon Union Church.

Miss Wylie was a newspaper reporter on the SCMP (one of the first). She was the only daughter of Ben and Mima Wylie. Ben Wylie was General Manager of SCMP. He was interned in Stanley during the war. His wife and daughter were evacuated to Australia in 1940 along with most other wives and children.

The Cangue - Was it used in Hong Kong?

Submitted by David on

Was the cangue used as punishment in Hong Kong, and if so during which years, and under what circumstances?

The cangue is a form of punishment that was used in China. Sometimes described as a 'wooden collar', it was a large wooden board that fastened around a person's neck. Here's a photo on Flickr that shows the cangue in use:

Stanley POW Camp and The Hong Kong Police

Submitted by imatches on

Hi

My name is Ian Matches. My father is Harold Matches (deceased - 26/08/92) He is featured in a number of photos of the Hong Kong Police.

My mother died last year and during the process of clearing out the attic we have discovered old files on the Hong Kong police force and a number of old photos.

Is there anyone who is interested in what we may have as we would be happy to provide info etc and copies of photos.

Mui Wo salt pans

Submitted by Hugh Farmer on

I am interested in finding out about salt pans that were located in Mui Wo around, or after, WW2. Apparently there is an aerial photograph(s) taken by the RAF which shows their location and which may possibly be  kept in HK Government archives.

Help please re Chinese Gardens:

Submitted by pauline on

Please can someone help me.  I am trying to establish exactly what is included in an authentic genuine Chinese Garden.  For instance,  does it have high walls all around,  how big are they,  do they have walkways and Tea Pavilions etc. ?

Any facts and figures i.e.  height,  dimensions,  plants grown (I assume that they have plants?) would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Pauline.
