WWII Aircraft Crash sites in HK

Submitted by Iloveoldhk on

Hi All. I just thought I would start a forum topic on this since I have seen it alot in the SCMP and other news outlets recently. It seems that not only downed Japanese plane wrecks could exist from the Battle of Hong Kong, but also. TBM Avenger wrecks have been found.

Here are 3 SCMP articles about TDM Avenger wrecks found in HK Island.

Star Ferry pre-1957

Submitted by jmbarrie on

Hi

I am researching the pre-1957 Star Ferry, especially the Tsim Sha Tsui side. Would anyone be able to help with details, unique quirks, etc. I am also trying to determine the fare at the time. The closest I've come was 20c in 1959 - post move - does anyone know if this was the fare before the move, or if the move triggered an increase?

Greatly appreciate any and all comments!

Ship Street Structures. (Former Tung Chi College)

Submitted by Iloveoldhk on

Hi all. I was on Ship Street in Wanchai this past friday and came accross a noteworthy site. As per the photos, these sites were very overgrown. They did appear to be some sort of military structures, but not like many I had seen. Appearing as a large series of bunkers partially embedded in the site of an incline face. After standing over a construction fence to take pictures for less than a minute I was told by a construction contractor that photos were prohibited.

Slow boat to Macau?

Submitted by Bails on

I have a dim and distant (childhood)recollection of an 'over-night' boat to Macau from Hong Kong.

I wonder whether anyone can recall this? I seem to think you boarded the boat in the evening, on a quite large passenger boat/ferry and arrived in the early morning in Macau.

Given the distance to Macau, it does seem rather unlikely? It must have travelled extremely slowly!

Any thoughts?

RHKP Triumph Motorbikes

Submitted by Fai Jai on

I'm looking for any information about the motorbikes used by the Police in the 60's.

My father (Murray Todd) was in the traffic division at that time, and rode one of the silver-grey Triumph motorbikes. They were of a type called a "bathtub Triumph" because of the distinctive shape of the rear wheel mudguard, which resembled an up-side down bathtub.

If possible I want to buy one and restore it, but I don't know exactly what model the Police used (there were various bathtub Triumph models).

They can be seen clearly in recruiting photo on this site, 'hkp 6.jpg'.
