In the summer of 1966 I took over as the Officer in Charge of Sai Kung police station. It was regarded as a very good posting, for there was hardly any crime, and the Sai Kung peninsula and its waters were very beautiful. The American film company 20th Century Fox were making The Sand Pebbles, starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Candice Bergen with a young Jackie Chan as a stunt man. They had originally wanted to do part of the film on location in the Yangtse River, but could not get permission to enter China.
A good starting point is to make a "Person" page on Gwulo for the person you are interested in: http://gwulo.com/node/add/person
Fill in as many of the details as you can, then use the Notes to add any extra information. I see the people who get the best responses include the following information in their Notes:
This covers the period 1904 -1960. There was a further renumbering that took effect on 1st September 1960 to give the present peak numbering system but I have not found a complete record of the change online. If anyone knows where this may be found I will add it to the below.

Conduit Road renumbering here

i have a large photo album dated 1935..with many professional dark sepia photographs of children people.. artisans. ear cleaners..shops..street views harbor views..etc. lots of them... they aren't signed..but are about 6 x 4 inches and dark sepia and wonderful.. mostly close up views. i would guess they were sold in hotels to tourists. anyone know photographers of that era? they are trimmed with thing black strip on edge. The album owner was a doctor . i believe..who might have worked at a nursing home. American stationed on USS Isabel 1934.
Hi, just getting ready to head to Taipei for a long weekend, and interested to hear any ideas for less well-known Gwulo-y sort of places to visit. Hong Kong connections a bonus, as are any opportunities to buy old HK photos / ephemera.
Regards, David
PS No newsletter this weekend, but there are several interesting photos & topics in the pipeline.

Please can any gwulo member tell me if they know of any taxidermists in Hong Kong in the 19th and 20th Centuries and where the records of these taxidermists might be?
I'll be in Hong Kong for 3 weeks in November and had the idea of perhaps making contact with retirees who live in Kwun Tong near the Public Records Office to join to transcribe a page or two each of the Rate Books. There is a large public housing estate there and I imagine there may be one or two English-reading folks who would enjoy the task.
I'd be interested to know if anyone has been successful with the relatively recent online application facility for records launched by the Births, Marriages and Deaths Office. I've previously only submitted written applications by post, enclosing a bankers draft. My bank has now become very reluctant to perform this clunky process, imposing a £25 fee. Very few staff even know how to do it. My last application for a bankers draft sent by fax from my branch to the International Department of Barclays was lost. The Immigration Dept.
