In 1933, the Government decided to erect a "New Stanley Cemetery" on the site of the old Stanley Cemetery. The latter was opened on 21 July 1843 until it closed on 15 July 1935.

The earliest Victorian gravestones in the present Stanley Military Cemetery are from 1843. There are 89 graves from the Victorian period, 3 from WWI and the remainder from the Japanese Occupation and after WWII.
