Who is Harlech Road named after?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Trying to track down how name Harlech Road on the Peak came into existence. Was it named after Lord Harlech who may then have been Right Hon. W. G. A. Ormsby-Gore, M.P., Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies? (aka Lord Harlech)

House names / numbers at The Peak

Submitted by David on

Addresses around the Peak have changed over the years.

First there were a small number of grand buildings, and addresses were simply "<Name of the house>, The Peak".

The number of houses increased, and at some point numbers were used. #1 was, not surprisingly, Mountain Lodge at the top of Victoria Peak. From there numbers increased in a roughly south-eastward direction, reaching #566 at the end of Middle Gap Road on Mount Cameron.

Today addresses follow the more usual <Number, Road> format. So "566, The Peak" is now "24, Middle Gap Road".

Where was this wartime photo taken?

Submitted by David on

Tony Banham has posted an interesting Japanese wartime photo showing shot-up cars. He describes it as:

[...] I suspect the car is the more distant one – more like a staff car - in that well known photo from the Mainichi Shimbun. Tim Ko was kind enough to provide a copy. The hillock in the background looks to me like the spur off Mt Gough where the Japanese War Memorial was later built, in which case this is near the top of Magazine Gap Road. Anyone got ant better ideas?

Any suggestions for the location?

I'm writing a long post about old photograph in Hong Kong. It is written in Chinese, but you can use google translator to translate it (about 30% accuracy) At least you can guess what I'm talking about.

If you are interested, I will try to publish here in English when I'm less busy (It will be a difficult task for me)
