Wanchai Road before 1920

Submitted by anonymous-01 on

I have been reading a lot of info about Wanchai Road and wonder if anybody has anything to say about the road from around 1890 to 1918. My great grandfather and great grandmother John Olson and Ching Ah Fung died there in 1918 and 1915 respectively at No 98. I think the lot was also was also a business premises.

I assume it moved back with the reclamation programmes. I was under the impression that 98 looked out across the harbour.

Sorry to be vague but it might ring a bell with somebody.

Thanks,

Sean

Kowloon side

Hello,

First of all, congratulations on an amazing site.  Very interesting.

And, I have a query.  I'm researching a book called Earth Then and Now for a London book publisher, and I'm currently looking for old photographs of Hong Kong Island from Kowloon.  I found one by chance on your side taken in 1979, but Ideally I'd like to see some earlier ones.  I would be very grateful for any advice regarding archives/collections I can get in touch with.

Many thanks and best,

Argyle Street POW Camp/Vietnamese Detention Centre

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Does anyone know what the former Argyle Street POW camp was used for after the war? It became a Vietnamese refugee camp in the late 70s/early 80s, but I can't find any information about its use from the mid-40s until the late 70s. I volunteered there in 1991 when it was a Vietnamese refugee camp and think it closed the following year. Any information is appreciated!

Original site of Sacred Heart Canossian College

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Hello,

Do you have old photos of the original site of Sacred Heart Canossian College which was located on Caine Road and Robinson Road? (In early 80's the secondary section moved to Pokfulam and later on in 90 the whole site was sold to Li Ka Shing and now it became the Robinson Heights.)

I spent my first six primary school years at the old campus, and memories of their architecture have been lingering on all these years. Hoping to get a glimspe of those old buildings again, in big and white photos...

Looking for photo of Kingfisher Restaurant on Carnarvon Road, TST

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I'm trying to locate a photo of Carnarvon Road from the 60s or 70s showing the Kingfisher Restaurant. My grandparents traveled to HK 8 times during those decades and raved about a restaurant on Carnarvon Rd in TST called the Kingfisher. When I moved to HK in 1990, I tried to locate it, but suspect it had closed years earlier. If anyone has any information, that would be great. I'd like to post something about this restaurant on my website, www.susanbkason.com

Hindu Temple Happy Valley

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Hello

I have read the current Hindu Temple in Happy Valley was built in 1952, but elsewhere I have found that there was a Hindu temple here way before that by at least 1910.  Does anybody know if the 1952 temple was built on the site of the original or if the original temple was located elsewhere in Happy Valley.  Thank you for your help.
