Anyone remember me?

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Hi all just wondering if anyone visiting here remembers me or my Dad, M.H.C. Dyer, or my Mum, Doris Dyer. My dad was an RAF pilot flying Dakotas from Kai Tak immediately after the Japanese surender, and then moved back to the far east after demob. My Mum was a homemaker.

We lived at the old Burnside Estates in Repaulse Bay and my father had offices in the Ming Yee building.

I went to Kennedy Rd Junior School (still got the cap)!

I've posted some photos at http://www.cirenwebdesign.com/hk/index.html

How do you write for Gwulo?

Submitted by David on

With the page layout fixed, time to look at another occasional problem - text layout looking wrong.

eg This week I received an email asking how to change line spacing.

When they saved the text they had written,

it was spaced too far apart - like this.

I've not had this problem before, but I've noticed other posts that look like this. Also there are regularly some posts with several blank lines at the top or bottom of the text.

Wing Lee Street

URA/govt give in to conservation:

The Urban Renewal Authority has proposed removing Wing Lee Street from its Staunton Street-Wing Lee Street redevelopment project to address public calls to preserve its special characteristics.

Speaking at a press conference today, the authority's chairman Barry Cheung said the body suggests making the street a designated zone for conservational use.

Farming in early Hong Kong

Submitted by anonymous-01 on

On the birth certificates of his first two children my great grandfather, Jons Jakobsson aka John Olson describes himself as a Farm Keeper though he held a liquor licence for The Natiional Tavern at the time. Much later he descibes himself as a landowner on the birth certificate of his last child.

I wonder is it likely that a Swedish sailor - albiet from an agricultural boyhood - would have got a job as a Farm Keeper on Hong Kong Island in the 1860s or was he coveringup a dishonourable trade?

Is there any record of what sort of farming Europeans carried out in those days?

Google Earth Street View - Hong Kong Launch

Submitted by tngan on

Ho there,

Found out earlier today that Google had just launch the Hong Kong version of Street View.  It claimed major parts of Hong Kong is covered with data collected by the Google car in the past year or two.

This would be one of the new tools to get a glimsp the location we intend to take a look without goout out.  Er, that is, if the location is covered in the first place.

Anyway..........  I still use street view to look at places in Los Angeles where I have been to a decade ago.

Best Regards,

Kai Tak

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I did my national service as an airframe mech. at KaiTak in about 1954. We serviced 28 sqnd Vampires and then Venoms. I have fond memories of my time there, I also have a number of photos showing the inside of the RAF hanger as well as the  aircraft we serviced. I was there when the last Sunderland flew in that area. If any one is interested I could put a few pics on this site.
