yung yung bee shui (I try to translate it to English)

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Hi David, how are you doing?  I try to look for a place called 'yung yung bee shui' in Cantonese.  I try to translate it to English as best as I can.  Do you have any idea where it is today.  My mom told me that this old building still exists.  Would you mind sedding some light?  Greatly appreciate your help.  Thanks again.  Mark.

North Kowloon Magistracy~Fleur de Lys decoration on staircase.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

Can anyone shed light on the Fleur de Lys decorations on the staircase at North Kowloon Magistracy?

It may be that either the Architect, or a member of the Hong Kong Judiciary had an interest in this particular decoration, which has featured in Coats of Arms of both the British and French for centuries.

Thanks, Tony. <tcarroll@netvigator.com>

Most Spam is just irritating. But sometimes I get stuff that is truly mind-boggling. Not for the outrageous claims, but for the fact that the sender seriously thinks they'll get some business out of it.

We've written about several old cable-car systems in Hong Kong. Which got this gentleman so excited he sensed a business opportunity:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Old sub-terrain public toilets?

Hi there,

It seemed a bit odd to have such a topic but indeed it was one of those totally unexpected during our meet-up over dinner.  Would you be more astonished if I tell you the topic was raised by the only lady present?    :-P

I could not recall anything like these on Kowloon side, but I have been peeing into at least three of them occasionally back in the 1970's.  They have one thing in common, ladies are not allowed.

1956 riots

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I've been trying to find some film or radio  commentary about/ during the 1956 riots (not 66 or  67).  I guess RTHK must have had some film as part of its news broadcasts. Does anyone have any, or know where they can be unearthed? Newspaper footage also of interest!

Best Governor

Submitted by RenoTommy on

In your opinion, which recent (starting from Grantham) HK British Governor contributed most to Hong Kong?  And why?

My vote is for MacLehose because of his establishment of ICAC to combat severe corruption and decay in our society at that time.
