John Olson and Jurys

Submitted by anonymous-01 on

After a quicK look through the records, John Olson first appears as Manager of the Oriental Restaurant in the 1867 Jury List. I have scanned through the lists too fast but his last entry is in 1891 as Manager of the Stag Hotel. Between times he was Proprietor of the National Tavern. There is also mention of his brother Olof in the late 1870s as manager of the National.

So the question is why does he suddenly get dropped off in 1891 and yet lives on until 1918?

Who could be a juror? - or Where's John Olson?

Sean Olson asks why his Great-grandfather John Olson doesn't appear in the Juror Lists. After all he lived in Hong Kong for close to sixty years, from appx 1860 til 1918.

First I thought British nationality may have been the issue, but the lists contain many European names that don't look as though they're British.

Did a potential juror's trade make any difference? Olson worked in and owned various pubs and taverns. Maybe that wasn't considered a suitable trade to be a juror?

Ady / Lynn / BAAG / OSS

Don Ady writes in, asking if anyone knows if his father had any connections with the BAAG [The wartime "British Army Aid Group", described here]:

It occurs to me now that my father might have had or at least had ought to have had some BAAG contacts.  You probably could not verify that, but I would be delighted to have any such info if you have it.

Hong Kong flag

Submitted by 80sKid on

I was surprised to see a large number of old Hong Kong flags (ie colonial) being waved during the July 1 pro-democracy march yesterday. In relation to that - and in honour of the handover - a question about the flag raising in 1841. I didn't know there was doubt over who first hoisted it. This interesting paper is old but does anyone know if the doubt been cleared up?

Colonial Titles

Moddsey:

TX for your info about Governor May.

I started this thread because I didn't want to "hijack" the "Rolls" thread. Governor May was once a British Colonial Administrator, I am wondering what kind of position was that........something like an Assistant Governor?  Did that position exit in the modern days, like just before the "handover" in 1997?

Why did some British colonies have Governors while others (especially down in the Caribbean) have Viceroys?  What were the differences?
