Government Documents Online

Submitted by patricia on

Now its the turn of the Gov Docs Online from HKU to have an overhaul.  This seems to be the new site http://hkgro.lib.hku.hk/exhibits/show/hkgro/home.

So far I'm not impressed, as the search etc seems to be the same, but then the results are a lot more clunky, and certainly my machine is not being able to click through pages easily.  And it took a lot longer .....????  Anybody see the rationale here?

Maps on Gwulo

Submitted by Admin on

I noticed problems with the  ... more places map this morning, where the markers and map controls can't be seen.

I think it is related to Google ending support for an older version of their map APIs. As a short term fix I've switched the maps to use the Open Street Map (OSM).

Longer term I'm guessing we won't get Google maps back until I've finished the upgrade of the site, and we can use their newer APIs.

If you notice other maps aren't working, please leave a comment below with the link to the page.

How do I add a "Place" page to Gwulo.com?

Submitted by Admin on

Before you start...

Have a quick look at the 'Map of Places', to see if anyone else has already created a page for the Place you're thinking about. Not there? Then here's how to add your new page:

1. Log in.

If you're already logged in, skip ahead to step 2. Otherwise please create an account if you're new to Gwulo.com, or log in if you already have a username and password here.

Does anyone know much about this abandoned building in Kowloon Tong?

Submitted by rajeh on

Hi everyone,

My family has lived in La Salle Road for the last 50 years and since I moved back from overseas I've been wandering around Kowloon Tong and admiring what's left of the old houses.

I came across this abandoned building on 4 Derby Road. Does anyone know anything about it? I heard it was a kindergarten at some point, but it looks like it's been abandoned for years.

Aerial View-Map - Kai Tak Airport & Walled City

Submitted by flyingcarpet on

Hello, I am trying to find BOTH an aerial view of Kai Tak Airport (old VHHH / HKG) and its relation to Kowloon Walled city. Does anyone know of such, available either on the internet or for purchase? These items would be used for mine own purposes of historical interest of Kai Tak airport and its immediate environs; not intended for publication.

Since Kai Tak Airport was closed in 1998 (?) and Kowloon Walled City became very populated from the 1960s until its closing and demolition I presume the aerial views and map would be from 1960s through 1998.

New version of The Hong Kong Legacy

Submitted by anonymous-01 on

For anybody who may be interested there is a new version - more info and pictures - and hopefully better looking, of my website, The Hong Kong Legacy. It is the story of my family in 19th and early 20th Century Hong Kong.

It is at www.thehongkonglegacy.com

I hope anybody who  looks at it takes some enjoyment and even a little knowledge from it. Many of you have contributed in one way or another. Thanks to all and please remember that it has just gone up and will probably need to be adjusted from time to time.

NB Gwulo website moving to faster hosting

Submitted by Admin on

Tomorrow (Monday, 23rd Sep) I'll move the website to a faster hosting service. I'm hoping it will make the site more responsive and so more pleasant to use, and cut down the errors and delays when posting new content.

Expect the site to be badly behaved tomorrow from time to time. I'll post an update when the move is complete, and ask for your help to let me know if I've broken anything.
