Golden Memories of Hong Kong - Exhibition on til Thursday

Submitted by David on

I haven't been along yet, but I'll post this first as it's only on for a short time.

It's organised by the Hong Kong Collectors Society, and according to the SCMP:

"Highlights from personal collections, including Chow's stereo-cards, will feature at the society's 20th anniversary exhibition... "

If you've already been to see it, what do they have on show?

Regards, David

HKAAF/RHKAAF insignia

Submitted by Dragonista on

I have recently acquired a HKAAF other ranks cap-badge, which, I am told, dates from between 1949 and 1951, the dates which apparently mark respectively the creation of the HKAAF and its metamorphosis into the RHKAAF. The badge is the standard World War Two RAF pattern, very similar to that also used by the RAAF, the RCAF and the RNZAF. It has the pierced brass letters HKAAF within a wreath of leaves and a King's crown up top. I'd be happy to supply a photo should anyone wish.

Royal Navy Mobile Malaria Hygiene unit

Submitted by Harry4acres on

My father, a RN gunner, sailed to Hong Kong from Australia on HMS Vindex arriving August 1945. He was involved in the liberation of Stanley Internment camp and never forgot the dreadful scenes he witnessed. He remained in Hong Kong until late 1946 working in the RN Mobile Malaria unit . I understand some of the Japanese guards at the camp were placed in work parties supervised by the RN then taken to clear the area around the south of the island. I have several photos of dad with these Japanese which I will upload to the site if of interest.

Service families evacuation

Submitted by Duncan Mearns on

My mother and Grandmother left Hong Kong in 1940 on a ship. My grandfather remained as a serviceman. My mother ended up in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne. My initial question is what boat did she leave on. I believe the Empress boats were for civilians only, is this correct. My mother does believe she went to Manilla initially. Her maiden name was Simms. She evntually returned to England via the Suez Canal during the war - I am also seeking information about this.
