This flotilla consisted of 10 Seaward Defence Launches, 4 Motor Minesweepers, Inshore Minesweepers and 8 Landing Craft Assault these craft were based at H.M.S. Tamar, or at the Small Ships Maintenance Based in Kowloon.

HK Government tableware

Submitted by Dragonista on

Hi everyone.

Do any of you remember, own, have photos of etc. any pieces of pre-handover HK Government crockery? The stuff for daily use that was common in canteens and police messes and so on.

I have a small milk jug and a plate, both of which were made in Japan and are in cream pottery with a pale green trim. The letters HK surmounted by a Queen's crown, also in pale green, are on both.

The UK <-> HK journey over the years

1860s - Sharon is researching how Thomas Jackson (Mr HSBC) first traveled to Hong Kong in the 1860s. Here's the story so far: http://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/thomas-jackson-and-overland-route.html

1870s - There are several notes about it in the thread about the 1878 fire: http://gwulo.com/The-Great-Fire-of-Hong-Kong

1920s - See this thread: http://gwulo.com/node/17157

Mystery photo. Hong Kong?

Submitted by benicek on

I found this photo in a flea market in England. Could be Hong Kong but I'm not sure. Lots of bilingual English and Chinese shops signs, and also some arabic, and Chinese nationalist flags. Appears to be a funeral procession but might be a political march. Children at the front possibly wearing uniforms and carrying suns and crosses. Any ideas?

I plan to use this forum to collect information on the history of Stanley. I'll put in items that would be good for display.

Parrots in Hong Kong

Submitted by Richard Muirhead on

I read a story in the Hong Kong Telegraph of March 14th 1902 reporting the sightings of 2 parrots in Hong Kong, one on Hong Kong Island the other in the New Territories. Yet I thought "conventional wisdom" had it that the parrots only appeared in Hong Kong during or after the Japanese occupation of 1941-45.

Any thoughts anyone?

Amakusa Marine Products Industrial Company

Submitted by Hugh Farmer on

The Industrial History of Hong Kong Group's website:

http://industrialhistoryhk.org/ has an article on HK Industry during World War Two.

Included is a brief mention under Fishing of the Amakusa Marine Products Industrial Company. This was apparently active in HK during the Japanese occupation around Dec 1942 onwards.

I can find no information about this company. Or of its role in HK during WW2.

Can anyone provide further details?

John Fleming

Submitted by anonymous-01 on

John Fleming was an accountant who was interned during the Japanese occupation. I wonder if anybody has any information regarding him given the amount of detail there is from the camps.

For some reason I think he was in Stanley. Maybe read it somewhere. He was a partner in Lowe and Co as far as I know and may have ended up as Managing Partner.

Thanks,

Sean
