Municipal Wastes Incinerators in Hong Kong

Submitted by Klaus on

Introduction

Municipal wastes were dumped in specially designed areas (tips) over decades. Due to high prices and low availability of land the Government of Hong Kong decided by the end of the 1950’s to investigate the building of municipal waste incinerators. At that time it became evident that the further lifetime of the main tip at Gin Drinkers Bay was limited.

Hello everyone,

Can anyone guide me to a source of information on gunpowder trade around HK 1850s and before ?

Are there any newspapers available for this time period?

Tracing John Peter Morgan or similar name, 1850s and before, connected with spice trade, sailing, shipping.

thank you,

Guns, Graves, and Geckos: Gwulo's guided walk around Mount Davis

Submitted by David on

The route is a favourite of mine - I've lived near Mount Davis for over 20 years, and walk this route once or twice a week. So after 1,000+ walks spent looking at things along the way and thinking "I wonder why that's like that...?", it seemed a good idea to share some of the answers!

"Baidu Fakir" (spelling?) on Kennedy Road

Submitted by Sikandar A. Madar on

The 1905 map of HK N. shore was interesting. In the map near No.3 Police station and the reservoir on Kennedy Rd. is blanked.

If my memory  is still correct my father did mention our family home was at Kennedy Rd. around that area-------the name of the estate was Baidu Fakir (not sure of the spelling). That would have been around the 1910s-1930s.

It was owned by the surname el Arculli. He was the founder of a co. called Arculli's Brothers, they are the compardore to supply provisions for the Indian troops with the British army in HK .

Chinese lanterns in UK

Submitted by Ben Zabulis on
I’m posting a rather seasonal question which some readers might know the answer to (an internet search has so far yielded zero).

I recall, whilst growing up in Nottingham (UK) in the late-1950s and 60s, one of our Christmas decorations was a small Chinese lantern (the concertina paper type which collapse flat for storage). I was reminded of this recently through a posting on a Nottingham nostalgia Facebook page, somebody else posted a picture of one they’d had and I was amazed at how many people wrote in claiming that they also had them.

Post Magazine 18th Dec 2016

They did a nice cover story titled 'the 18 days of Black Christmas' in this week's edition of the post magazine. It featured a choronological account of the invasion plus some extracts from the soldier's diaries from multiple sources. Wonder if everything is already in the Gwulo collections?
