Where was Royal Engineers HQ in HK 1955?

Submitted by Virginia J on

Good afternoon all.

Am on brief and unexpected visit to HK, staying above Sha Tin in the New Territories. Have just received long letter from my 86-year old mother recalling her life here with my father and my older sister between 1955 and 1958. Am trying to locate a couple of the places she mentions but there are info gaps in her story after 60 years...

Shanghai

Submitted by Kim Shamash on

I apologise in advance if this is a misuse of this site but does anyone know of any similar forum or group for mainland China and specifically Shanghai? Failing that does anyone know any officals in the Overseas Office in Shangahi? I am trying to trace land transactions for 2 specific addresses from 1946 but for obvious reasons there does not appear to be an equivalent to the Hong Kong Land Registry.

Many thanks,

Kim

Filming The Sand Pebbles near Sai Kung

Submitted by Peter Ferry on

In the summer of 1966 I took over as the Officer in Charge of Sai Kung police station.  It was regarded as a very good posting, for there was hardly any crime, and the Sai Kung peninsula and its waters were very beautiful.  The American film company 20th Century Fox were making The Sand Pebbles, starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Candice Bergen with a young Jackie Chan as a stunt man.  They  had originally wanted to do part of the film on location in the Yangtse River, but could not get permission to enter China.
