Gregory Peck was a recently known name in Hong Kong when they showed this film. His Chinese name is shown on the left of this advertisement. Though not having watched this movie or read it plot, I think its Chinese title is more impressive, and it loosely translated to "(His) Sound and Power Shake Nine States". Across the street on the other side there was a gas station where car washing was a frequent scene. Now, the triangular site is a park.
The PWD Annual Report for 1928 notes its completion that year, and gives its location as "M.L. 58, R.P., Queen’s Road West.".
On the Cinema Treasures website, Raymond Lo writes that it opened for business on 30th July 1928.
The first purpose built theatre in HK, Tung Hing theatre, was built on the corner of market Street (today named Po-Hing Fong) and Grace street (today called Po Yan Street) This theatre opened in 1867, and was later renamed Chung Hing Yuen. The theatre closed in early 1910. The Duke of Edinburgh visited in 1869 to see a Chinese Opera performance put on in his honour by the local Chinese community.
From the PWD report of 1912:
Details from Cinema Treasures:
270, Queen's Road Central
Opened on 14th June 1930, and closed on 10th June 1971.
Designed by Palmer & Turner.
Seen from above it had a very distinctive roof, with a large dome across the centre of the building, and two smaller domes at the front.
The Cinema Treasures website notes that it opened to business on 5th March 1948, and closed on 1st of June 1995, see: http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/22922
It is now boarded up on the street side. By its looks the four walls are still standing but the roof had come down quite a few years ago. Rolls of seats could still be seen last year. Uncertain if the site is marked or redeveloment.
