Charitable donations a guarantee of presence?

Submitted by jill on

Does anyone have evidence whether named charitable donations reported in the press were a guarantee that the donor was actually in Hong Kong at the date of giving? I gather that named floral tributes for funerals were no guarantee that the sender was actually in the colony at the time of the funeral. Perhaps a charitable donation attributed to a particular person was not a guarantee of their presence in the colony.

Please Gwulo, could I once again ask for help?

Six years ago I asked for help to trace the final voyage to Sydney of my grandmother Hannah Mabel Warren. Tony Banham hadn’t been able to find her on any of the evacuation ships and I have since assumed that she went at her own expense, unless she went via Manila, of which the manifests hadn’t been published. The frequent amazing detective work of annpake and just now eurasian_david’s on the Rollitts’ voyage to Sydney gives me courage to ask again - and hope.

Two Well/Water structures North West of Jockey Club Mt. Davis Youth Hostel

Submitted by MikeB on

We discovered a Ribbon Trail leading from Victoria Road at the end of Kennedy Town through the Kung Man Village Resettlement Village

all the way on a ridge to the Jockey Club Mr. Davis Youth Hostel. The recent Typhoon turned it into a machete wielding exercise but the path

is pretty clear now to use. Approaching the Hostel we came across 2 dilapidated structures in the jungle. They appear to be some kind of water

installation with their well like appearance.

Does anyone know what they were or when they were built/used?

Motor Torpedo Boat / "Wind Thunder Boat"

The MTBs that operated in Hong Kong pre 1941 were known by the locals to be extremely noisy vessels. Their powerful engines could be heard for miles !

In his book "Escape from the Japanese" Lt. Cdr. Ralph Goodwin notes that he heard the MTBs start up in Aberdeen, to flee for China,

from his bed in Queen Mary Hospital, some 4 kilometres away. He was injured and a patient there on December 25th, 1941, when the Colony surrendered.

Kowloon Golf Club

Submitted by Isochronous on

Saw a circa 1930s map of Hong Kong sporting attractions recently and was intrigued by the apparent existence of a Kowloon Golf Club. By its placement on the map it would have been near the KCR line, my best guess around the Prince Edward area. Does anyone have more information on this?

Ditto for the Shatin Golf Club also.
