Amos William Dawe and Mosbert

Submitted by namussi on

I'm intrigued by the story of a Singaporean, Amos William Dawe, and his company, Mosbert, which listed on the Kowloon stock exchage went bust in the 1970s. I think it would make a good book.

Dawe tried to buy several banks in the US, which he later said was a KGB plot. Dawe was jailed in Hong Kong for five years for fraud in the 1980s, but was released after serving just half of his sentence.

Does anyone know if he's still alive, or know anything about him, or know of any good sources of information, please?

Best wishes

Josephine Bracken (Wife of Jose Rizal) - born in Victoria Barracks, Hong Kong

Submitted by Andrew Craig-Bennett on

A friend, an historian of the Phillipine Revolution and the events leading up to it, would very much like to be able to locate Josephine Bracken's birth certificate and indeed if possible her grave. Her baptismal certificate is extant but that's that. There must surely have been a birth certificate too.

Josephine Bracken is significant because she was the wife of Dr Jose Rizal, the hero of the Philippines struggle against Spain. Her nationality is usually given as "Irish" but that is more correctly a descripotion of her ethnicity; she would have been a British citizen.

Submitted by lizchater on

I understand that The Armenian Church, Committee and clergy in Kolkata will be recognising and celebrating Sir Paul Chater's birthday next week on the 8th September by travelling to Hong Kong and conducting a service at his graveside. Further details can no doubt be obtained from the church directly. Email:armenianchurch@sify.com

How were marriages registered ?

Submitted by annelisec on

The HK Marriage Ordinance was passed or went into effect in 1875.

However, my impression is that marriages among 1st generation Eurasians who were brought up within Chinese culture were not done in churches and only perhaps in a marriage registry.  Do you think it likely that marriages from  1880 or so were registered ?

Historical stock prices

Submitted by Compradore on

Does anyone know where to find accurate historical stock prices for Hong Kong companies in the 1970s?

The HK Economic Journal did not come into existence until mid-'73 and some of the other sources I have seen over the years do not seem very accurate.  It doesn't help that there were multiple stock exchanges at the time.  I am looking for information about market capitalizations, share price, earnings per share, dividends, etc . . . for the major companies like Jardine Matheson, Hongkong Land, Hongkong Bank and Hutchison.

In the Web

Submitted by anonymous-01 on

I have been searching in vain for some time now for a copy of Peter Hall's book In the Web.

I am interested in the book of course, but also want to know whether there is any mention in it of my great grandfather John Olson who married Ching Ah Fung in the early 1890s and had four children with her.

If any Gwulo addict has a copy of the book I would appreciate them having a quick scan through the index! Any info would be appreciated.
