Happy Valley Cemetery

Submitted by jacqueline wallace on

Hi,

As a new poster I just wish to say thank you to your site for the invaluable information  I found when searching for the grave of my aunt. Your reference number lead me straight to the grave when I visited Hong Kong in March 2014.

My aunt Jeannie Chapple was killed in a car accldent in Hong Kong on 27/12/56 at the age of 25. She was the oldest child in a family of eight and helped to bring up her younger siblings when her mother died in 1946. She married an army man and he was posted to Hong Kong when the accident happened.

Re-numbering of Queen's Road Central in the 1960s

Submitted by David on

On a 1911 map (Plate 3-4, Mapping Hong Kong), the even numbers start with 2, Queen's Road Central (QRC), the Grand Hotel, between Ice House & Duddell Streets.

Today that site is 8, QRC.

It looks as though the re-numbering happened some time in the 1960s. I guess it was triggered by the construction of the Hilton Hotel (2, QRC) and Beaconsfield House (4, QRC) in the early 1960s.

If anyone can confirm the date the re-numbering happened, please let us know.

Regards, David

Do you have old pictures (1930's) of this place or area? It is important for me because my father was grown up there.

I will visit the place in the first week of June this year.

In advanced I hope to see your reaction.

Kindly regards, Milly (from The Netherlands)file:///Users/Pieter/Desktop/Afbeelding%201%20-%20versie%203.jpg

Second Attempt: Looking for Survivors of 1937 typhoon

Submitted by olivia.rosenman on

Hello,

This is my second attempt because I have still not found anyone.

I am hoping to find someone who lived through the 1937 Typhoon for a piece I am writing. I would love to hear their memories of their experience in the storm and the aftermath.

The article will be a feature in the South China Morning Post which will aim to inform and educate Hong Kongers about the wild and wonderful weather of this city, including the risks (as we have seen this week, it can be very unpredicatble).
