Mandarin Hong Kong hotel restaurants in the 1970s?

Submitted by maureenfan on

A letter from June 1977 describes the Mandarin Hotel Marqee (sic) restaurant. Does the writer mean the Marquee Coffee Shop? Assuming it's been updated since then, do any Gwulo members have photos from that time, or a description of the interior or famous menu items? Is that coffee shop now today's cake shop? Was the hotel then simply called The Mandarin, or The Mandarin Hong Kong (and not the Mandarin Oriental until the 1980s)? Many thanks.

Replying to a post from 2012 with regards to John Joseph osborne. He was my grandfather and he died in stanley internment camp from scurvy and berri berri. His son Albert Cyril osborne worked on the docks. My grandfather worked as the post master general. His wife Mary bridgett and younger children - Margaret, Roy, Gerald and Joyce were evacuated to the Philippines where they stayed for six months before being evacuated to Brisbane Australia. My grandfather had to stay in Hong Kong as only women and children were evacuated.

Hong Kong July 1946 - swimming naked

Submitted by Dave W on

This should test the Gwulo regulars.

An extra from my book the History of HMS Queen. The event took place in mid July 1946.

Once again John Clayburn brings out the more extraordinary memories. “In Hong Kong a few of us went swimming in the indoor pool at Kowloon. This was the only bath that I ever encountered where they insisted that we swam naked. Apparently they were afraid of contamination from swimming trunks in case you had been in water by the harbour.”

Who can identify the swimming pool?

New "Photos" tab on Places

Submitted by Admin on

I've made an improvement to Places, adding a tab that shows all the photos we have of the Place. eg here are all the photos we have of St. John's Cathedral:

http://gwulo.com/node/2542/photos

The main page for a Place already shows thumbnails of the photos, but the new page shows larger photos, and shows all photos on a single page.
