Building Next To Shophouses

Submitted by OldTimer on Mon, 12/11/2017 - 11:41

Greetings:  It is very common to see new residential flats built butting against shophouses, and an example of such is shown in this photo.   Across the street, the two relatively new buildings were likely constructed at two different time and there is no air gap between the two either.

I have never watched how they are built, so I wonder if they install a membrane between the two such that at a later time when the shophouses are to be demolished, the job would be easier than to chip out the older concrete.

Tung Hing Butcher/Grocery Store had been around since the early 1960s. Its style was typical in the 60s and 70s, with different vendors selling beef, pork, fish, poultry, vegetable, etc in different corners of the shop. The building was demolished earlier this year (2017).

A one eyed poultry vendor was murdered one afternoon in the 70s or 80s mysteriously. He was sitting outside his stall, facing Shu Kuk Street, when something very small was shot into his neck. He fell ill and died within hours.

These wicker shops occupied the ground level flats on Ki Lung Street next to Yen Chow Street, same on Tai Nan Street, and on east side of Yen Chow Street.  Bus Route #2 terminal at the time was on NE corner of Lai Chi Kok Road and Yen Chow Street intersection.
