Kowloon Tsai

Submitted by Junie on

Has anybody got photos of Edinburgh Mansions, army quarters from late 1970s. My daughter was born at the British Military Hospital and we are going to Hong Kong in September so I would like to take her to the area. I will also try and find distant relatives. Thank you. June

4.5a Make tables sortable again

Submitted by Admin on

It used to be possible to sort the Jurors Lists by their columns (eg by Title).

At some point that had stopped working, but it's fixed now and working again.

If you have any large tables you want to make sortable, you just need to make a small edit to the HTML. Click "Switch to plain text editor", and look for the HTML tag that starts the table

<table ...other stuff...>

Edit it to add in class="sortable"

<table class="sortable" ...other stuff...>

The "French Hospital"

Submitted by Paul Christensen on

I just thought I'd put this here because it seems to me that on this site there is an assumption that "the French Hospital" refers solely to St Paul's in Causeway Bay. But I just realised that in Cantonese St Teresa's Hospital on Prince Edward Road is also known by that name. They were both founded by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres.

Just something to be aware of when reading old documents referring to the "French Hospital"

Major K. Hussain & Major D.C. Lightbody

Submitted by ssuni86 on

I am hoping to learn more about two military officers who were posted to Hong Kong from late 1945 to 1947.  They both played a role in the postwar recovery of the remains of American airmen killed during raids on Hong Kong.

1.) Major K. Hussain: He was a member of the War Crimes Investigation Unit.  Anyone know his full name and whether his last name is spelled correctly?  Was he Royal Army?

Kialung Wan Cemetery, Victoria Mortuary, and the HK Death & Birth Registration Bureau

Submitted by ssuni86 on

I've been reading some archival documents circa 1946 and have been left with a few questions that I hope Gwulo readers can help me with.

1.) Kialung Wan Cemetery: Where is (or was) this cemetery in Hong Kong?  Does it still exist and has its name changed?  Are there alternate spellings of "Kialung Wan"?

2.) Victoria Mortuary: Was this in Kennedy Town in 1946?  Was "Victoria Mortuary" the official name?

2019-05 RTHK's Hong Kong Heritage - Gwulo Gubbins

Submitted by David on

Annemarie Evans invited me on to her radio show, Hong Kong Heritage, for a chat about what she's christened "Gwulo Gubbins". It sounds like someone from The Hobbit, but instead we chatted about some of the new photos in my latest talk, visiting the UK's National Archives, and other odds and ends - ie the gubbins.

Here is the link to listen to the show:
