Hong Kong video from 1938

Submitted by Mr Tall on

A dedicated batgung reader has tipped me off with regard to an excellent clip on youtube. It's a 1938 travelogue feature on Hong Kong. The video quality and audio are both very clear, and although the scenes filmed are a bit stereotyped at times, there's enough there to provide some excellent views of the many parts of the territory, and lots of people/street scenes. I noted that the film maker seemed to have a bit of a fascination for local ladies in cheongsams, but I can't say I blame him for that. Anyway, have a look!

Lyon Lights

Submitted by David on

A big thankyou to Rob Weir for writing in with this detailed explanation of Lyon Lights (and thanks to Tony for the introduction):

Lyon Lights.

Each Lyon Light was a self-contained (Lister petrol engine Briggs and Stratton petrol engine with generator) small searchlight (about 20 -24 inch diameter) which was an integral part of Hong Kong's beach defences. The combination of Pillbox and Lyon Light were referred to officially as a Beach Defence Unit.

Set location by lat/lon, or by map

Submitted by Admin on

The next time you add / edit a place or an image, you'll see latitude and longitude fields where you can type in their values directly. This will be most useful for readers like T who are using GPS devices to record their position.

You can still set the location by clicking on the map: the latitude & longitude fields will automatically update to display the correct values for your marker's position.

Some other old Hong Kong photos on the net

Submitted by tngan on

Hi there,

Bumped into this blog earlier.  Despite it is entirely written in Chinese, this blog has quite a load of local old photos.  Thee are nine sections in total.  The link pasted below is the last section.  Owing to the way the photos are organized, it would take quite a while for all the photos to be loaded.

Best Regards,

T

How to show photos from other sites

Submitted by David on

Here's how to include a photo in a new place, comment, or forum post.

I'm assuming your photo is hosted on another server, and you know the url of the file, eg

http://byfiles.storage.live.com/y1prhjovjDKlK7f4ROWXz3x-URBoPSLzpGbDli3L8mBQ0ntZ0gePDldxEf_QqyVCOGx

If we take a new comment as an example, you'll need to paste a small piece of HTML in the comment you are typing. Don't worry, it's just a simple cut & paste of the following text:

Change in how pages update

Submitted by Admin on

Anonymous users (anyone that isn't logged in) will see a change in the way the site behaves. When they visit www.batgung.com or click any of the 'home' links, the page will not update. The easiest way to spot this is that the banner photo doesn't change.

If you want to force the page to update (eg to update the 'What's new' section on the left), just press the F5 key.

Or log in - then the page updates every time you view it.

Why the change?

Hong Kong Shop Houses

Submitted by philk on

I find these building fascinating - harking back to an era that is sadly no more (as per usual with somewhere as 'dynamic' as HK). I get quite excited whenever I see one, sometimes on main thoroughfares, sometimes tucked away in the maze of streets that litter the territory. Perhaps it is their relative scarcity adds to their allure? Either way I have decided to try and document as many of them as possible and, at the inspired suggestion of David, to do this on Gwulo.
