I'm not much one for the SCMP, it rarely has anything I find interesting and takes me about 2 minutes to read. However, today was a bit of a bonus because it had a large article on a photo exhibition on at the HKU library (I think?). A collection of historical HK transport photos is on display until late June (you may find some to add to the KCR terminus project there, MrB?).
Forman took photos of two families, both with young children. Here is the photos of the first family, with three young children and a nurse and helper, both of whom look as though they are from the Philippines. The photos of the second family show two young children, and just one chinese amah.

The gorup taken inside show a group of American women signing various documents at the bank's counter. The mood among the group is light-hearted, you can see they are enjoying their moment of fame in front of Forman's camera. But there's another, sadder tale unfolding at the same time the photos were taken.

I went to revisit the old british military hospital, as for the longest time in my mind i remembered seeing ER-I on all the drain pipes. I knew what ERII meant, but not ERI. As i looked today again, I confirmed all the pipes did have ER-I on them.
Does anyone know what ER-I stands for?

There's a group of Forman's photos that were taken in or just outside the American Express office. [View photos]
As this 1956 Time Magazine article about American Express traveler's cheques says, "U.S. tourists eagerly bought the checks".
Several of the Harrison Forman photos show ARP tunnels under construction. On some (eg this one), it is possible to see a number above the entrance. Here's what I think the different numbers mean.
First there are the Site Numbers. I believe these were the original numbers used, assigned to each construction site where tunnels were dug. Guessing again, I'd say they were given out in the order that sites were decided upon, so earlier sites have lower numbers.
anyone else been checking out the amo's new grading of buildings? Pretty impressed so far, if it means Grade 1 buildings are no unlikely to be torn down. Also amazing how poor the grading was before: the old Bank of China building in Central wasn't graded at all before, neither was the Peninsula.

When I lived in HK in the 70s, I remember seeing a few large, old, castle-like houses that people lived in. In the mid-levels, for example. I would love to find photos of these if anyone knows of any. I'm sure they're all gone now but they seemed wonderful and very mysterious. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Internet searches about Hong Kong's history often turn up books by Solomon Bard, so I'm pleased to see there's a chance to hear him speak this Friday. He was born in 1916, and has packed so much into his long life that there is certainly no shortage of material. Here are the details of the talk, hosted by the Royal Asiatic Society:
