hook

Submitted by gweipo on

I was running up Mount Davis Path the other morning and noticed a hook embedded into the slope on the left hand side. What was striking is that it is very similar to a hook they have in Gibraltar on the mountain which was apparently used to help military weaponary get up the steep slope during WW2.  Anyone have a history about the one here in HK?  Is it also from WW2?

Pubs and hotels in Old Hong Kong

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on

I wonder if anybody has information about pubs and hotels in the early days of HK.

My great grandfather, John Olson, arrived in Hk from Sweden around 1860 and was involved in The National Tavern - he held the liquor licence for it - at 292 Queens Road West and was also manager of the Oriental Restaurant. This property seems to have morphed into the National or Nationals Hotel which I think he was the proprietor of.

Google News Archive

Google has added a very cool function - allowing you to search scanned newspapers over the past century or so. the best feature is the timeline, showing the frequency of stories about the search terms, plus you can narrow it down to free archives. The number of newspapers seems limited at the moment - but check this for example - the Sydney Morning Herald on the fall of Hong Kong

What is the object in this photo and what is its function?

I went for a tour of the old buildings in Tai Hang, Causeway Bay, and on the corner of Omsley Road and College Street (at the back of No 3, 4 School Street) I saw the object in this photo.  Does anyone know what it is / was for?

Also, how does one read the marking on these "house" shaped signs?
