Charles M. LARSON JR. (aka Chuck) [1934-2017]

Born to Alice and Charles Martin Larson in Hong Kong in 1934. His father worked for the Standard Vacuum and Oil Company at Lai Chi Kok.

The Larson family was interned in Stanley Internment Camp in 1942 and later repatriated to the United States. Their arrival on the Gripsholm was recorded in The Daily News Times, Neenah, Menasha, Wisconsin here

Paul Erwin RAETZ [1937-2015]

Born to missionary parents, Florence and Erwin William Raetz in Hong Kong in 1937.

The Raetz family was repatriated on the Gripsholm in 1942. Their arrival in the United States is mentioned here in The Daily News Times, Neenah, Menasha, Wisconsin on 26 August 1942.

In 1946, the Raetz family moved to Canton, China but later was forced to leave and settle in Hong Kong. They returned to the United States in December 1950.

Elizabeth R. PARK (aka Betty) [1934-????]

Born in Hong Kong to American missionaries, Catherine and Harland A. Park. 

The Assemblies of God Heritage Magazine (Winter 1991) has an article on "Missionaries Caught in the Crossfire" in Hong Kong during the Japanese invasion. The Park family and their fellow missionaries are mentioned, including photos of themselves on board the exchange ship "Gripsholm". See here

Catherine Elizabeth Day PARK [1909-1961]

Catherine Park and her husband, Harland A. Park were American missionaries serving the Assemblies of God Church. They came to Hong Kong in 1930 and went into China in 1931. In 1936, she became Principal of the First Assembly of God Church Primary School in Hong Kong. 

Harland A. PARK [1907-1971]

Harland A. Park and his wife, Catherine Park were American missionaries serving the Assemblies of God Church. They came to Hong Kong in 1930 and went into China in 1931. He later became Superintendent of the South China District of the Assemblies of God.

Peggy HORTON (née HO-HILL) [1928-2022]

Introduction

Born to James Hill and Rose Ho in 1928, Peggy bore many hardships during her time in Hong Kong. The timely arrival of the British Fleet in Hong Kong harbour on the 30th August 1945 and the generosity and kindness of a British man who had been a prisoner of war under the Japanese, enabled her to survive. She was able to emigrate to England to live a joyful and productive life until cancer brought her life to an end in 2022.

Yat Sen KONG (aka 江日新) [1892-1978]

  • Kong Yat-sen was the bodyguard of Kwok Chuen (郭泉), one of the founders of Wing On Company. Due to Kwok Chuen's support for the China Congregational Church (中華基督教會公理堂), Kong also embraced Christianity. He served as a member of the Church Council from 1941 to 1945 and later became a deacon (1).

Francisco Maria SOARES (aka Frank) [1892-1915]

In 1914, Francisco (Frank) Maria Soares was a clerk with the Netherlands Trading Society. He volunteered to serve in the Great War and was attached to the 3rd Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. Private Soares was killed in action on 5 April 1915 and the first local Volunteer to fall in the war. His grave is in the Chester Farm Cemetery, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission burial ground in West Flanders, Belgium.
