Hong Kong POWs - Tse Dickuan's list

Submitted by David on Mon, 03/09/2015 - 17:06

This list of the prisoners of war is provided by Elizabeth Ride. She writes:

It was the official nominal roll compiled by the Japanese "Department for Prisoners of War and Internees", which was surreptitiously copied page by page by Tse, and then re-typed with additional information by BAAG.

You can imagine what it meant to relatives who in some cases had had absolutely no news of their relatives since the fall of Hongkong - even whether they were alive or dead.  One sometimes reads "Suddenly in 1944 we got the news ... ..." - that was thanks to Tse´s bravery.

Mr Tse Dickuan copied the list at great personal risk. He describes how he went about it at: http://gwulo.com/comment/30861#comment-30861

POWs are grouped by which part of the armed forces they served in, eg HQ, Middlesex, R.A.S.C., R.A.F., Royal Rifles of Canada, etc. Below I've noted which groups are listed on each page.

Within a group, POWs are listed in tables, two POWs per line. Each POW's entry is further divided into four columns:

  1. Status. This is explained in a key shown on page 45:

       "1" - 1st Draft to Tokyo
       "2" - 2nd Draft to Kobe & Etc.
       "3" - 3rd Draft to Kobe & Nigkasaki
       "4" - 4th Draft to Tokyo & Etc.
"S" - Special Draft to Formosa.
       "5" - 5th Draft to Japan.
       "6" - 6th Draft to Japan.
       "Sen" - Imprisoned
"Ex" - Executed, Bayoneted or Chopped
"O" - Out of Camp, most probably chopped.
"2D" - Drowned on Lisbon Maru during 2nd Draft
"2S" - Left behind at Shanghai during 2nd Draft
"D" - Deceased (some very suspicious)
       "Es" - Escaped from Camps.
Those without any marks were remained in HK.

  2. Number. Each POW is given a unique number. The numbers run from 1 to 7170, then jump to two extra numbers 10981 and 10982.

  3. Name and additional comments in brackets.

  4. Rank.

I've included the scanned pages as images. It would be great to have the information available as text to make it easier to search. If you're willing to help type up some or all of a page, please let me know so we can agree a format. Then I'll paste your text under the relevant page below.
