"Vaudeville" ((see 8th July for details))
We have had our thunderstorm, but we only got the fringe of it. Still, we had buckets of rain. The weather is still very heavy and sticky and there is more thunder about. It was very hot a week ago; I am told the mercury reached the 90’ mark.
I haven't written for a week - no more news and food is rather terrible. We are always hungry but my weight is not down any more and my blood count keeps up though it is going down slightly. More trouble in Camp and several more arrests - 3 in all I think, totalling 9 This lot includes J.A.
Commissioner of Police John Pennefather-Evans is taken from church and arrested.
Note:
Pennefather-Evans was accused of receiving illegal messages, but he presumably came up with a convincing story, as he was released without charge.
About four days ago, on a small tree by the hospital, an atlas moth emerged from its huge grey cocoon and hung on it for the rest of the day, its huge and beautiful wings outspread, drying off.
Example of an Atlas Moth:
Darling - Letters 17 & 18 turned up today; lovely but of course you were disappointed as Dora's letter had got home and there was nothing for you. Pennefather-Evans was taken away by the Gendarmerie this morning - D.O.K. why - I hope he gets back soon.
Tired tonight Honey so I won't write more. AIAW. BB

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Pennefather-Evans, was arrested by the Japanese on Sunday morning and has been detained with the others ever since. He was called away from Holy Communion. That now makes eleven. I cannot imagine what charge has been brought against him. Both the Commissioner of Police and the DCP are now awaiting trial. I wonder if the Japanese are scared about firearms and think the police may have brought some with them.
Painting initials for Dr Hackett.

A notice apears in camp:
The Japanese Camp Authorities informed me to-day that 10 Dutch bankers (2 married couples and 6 single men) will arrive here from town on 16th July probably at 2 p.m.
These 10 persons must be accomodated in the Dutch part of our block and the Camp Authorities have ordered that the billeting and re-billeting in this block are to be affected in accordance with the scheme shown below. ((Missing))
Those of the inhabitants of this block who are required to move, must do so before 6 p.m. on 15th July 1943.
Another sensation was caused by the arrest of the Commissioner of Police Pennefather-Evans on Sunday when he was called out of the 9 o'clock communion service and taken away. Why he has been taken away beats us, but there it is and how he is doing about a change of clothing is unknown to us as his things have not been taken away altho' in the case of the others theirs were taken.
