hi i am a HK journalist, and doing research for Lawrence Gibbs(1865-1943, civil engineer), i'd like to write an article about him, however even i have already gathered many information, I couldn't find his photo.
he was in HK from 1890-1928, working for Public Works Department(10 years) then later in a private firm Messr Denison, Ram (he became partner a year later , and the firm changed the name as "Messr Denison, Ram and Gibbs" , 28 years)
Ugo Gonella was an architect in partnership with Ernest Manning Hazeland. Together they formed the company Hazeland & Gonella. Ugo Gonella appears in Tony Lam's list of accredited Hong Kong architects. St Margaret's Church at the bottom of Broadwood Road was his unique project. Ugo married Grace Thereza Murray, one of the five daughters of Patrick and Lucretia Murray. Patrick Murray gifted him one of his properties, rem. part. I.L. 1551. Grace predeceased Ugo aged only 32. If I understand Carl Smith's card no.
"Abdoolhoosen" seems to be an anglicisation of Abdul Hussein, as spelt on one of the Carl Smith cards that references him. The name "Abdoolrahim" is also an anglicisation. A. Abdoolrahim appears on the Jurors List for many years and seems to have worked his way up from clerk to draughtsman to architect. He is credited on the 1903 list of Authorised Architects of Hong Kong and founded his own company, Abdoolrahim & Co., 34 Queen's Road Central, which also employed other architects.
He was added to the list of authorised architect in Hong Kong in 1930. See item 692 in the Government Gazette, Nov 21, 1930.
Here's his entry in the 1941 Jurors List:
c | Tebbutt, Henry Jemson | Architect, Davies, Brooke & Gran. | 41 Humphreys Building, Kowloon. |
English born. Apparently, he was the (acting )director of public works in HK from 1910-1917, after working for the ceylon civil service for a time. Father of the famous WWII hero Jack Churchill.
As shown by public records David has added below, he also was involved in the military (the HKDC while in Hong Kong)
He was a proprietor of Clark & Iu Architects. He died aged sixty-five. His wife Marion Clark was not on the Camp list and I believe she was moved to the French Hospital.
