Photos of Hong Kong war gardens

Submitted by Rachel Ip on

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, and I have been looking for histrorical photos of gardens made in wartime in Hong Kong (and Asia more generally). I know in WW2, internees in Stanley prison created kitchen gardens to supplement food provisions, and I also heard there were gardens in the grounds of some schools during the war.

Adopted - Tracing Birth Mother

Submitted by Crystal on

I am looking for my birth grandmother on behalf of my dad who was adopted early 1960.

I'm working with a pro-bono tracer on getting info. from the Red Cross (but it's taken years so far). All in all it's taken me the better half of a decade to obtain some non-identifying info. from the SWD but with HK governmental agencies not really operating at the moment, there's a hold-up with any progress and I'm getting a bit anxious. So I thought to give this forum a go as I've found the sleuthing here top notch.

Free Gwulo talk via Zoom this Saturday, 8th August

Submitted by David on

I'd originally planned to be in London this Saturday, presenting a talk in person to the Friends of the RAS Hong Kong Branch. Covid-19 put an end to those plans, but the talk is going ahead online, kindly hosted by the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) here in Hong Kong. It's open to anyone around the world, just book as shown below.

999 year leases - compilation

Submitted by MowerBreeze on

Hey all,

One of my friends told me about 999 year leases last year. I looked online but couldn't find much information- even my rental agent told me that they were rare and hard to find, and located only in mid-levels. So I spent the past month doing a lot of research and compiling a list of current buildings that sit on lots with 999 year leases, and it turns out there's quite a lot of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/999-year_leases_in_Hong_Kong
