Beriberi is one of the tropical illnesses prevalent in Hong Kong during the War.  The name is thought to come from Sinhalese, from beri meaning weak.  The disease is caused by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1), which affects the nerves to the limbs and produces pain, paralysis and swelling.

Dairy Farm Co Advertisments

Submitted by habaan on

I'm working on my dissertation about the milk culture of Hong Kong and I have been trying for a very long time to find ads released by the Dairy Farm, Co., particularly in its early years. I tried using the HKPL and HKGRO databases but to no avail given that their search functions are virtually useless (compared to the other digital archives that I have thoroughly enjoyed when researching the culinary history of the Americas and the UK).  I realized that the HKPL search function completely ignores ads and can barely highlight anything of importance.

Yau Tong Bay [Kwun Tong Tsai Wan] Development

Submitted by Klaus on

Introduction

End of the 1950s to the early 1960s, the Hong Kong Government started a major reclamation project in Kwun Tong which is located in the south-east of the Kowloon Peninsula, opposite to the extended Kai Tak Runway. The main reasons for the development were the need for new industrial sites as well as massive creation of living space (NEW TOWN concept).

Further down south-east, next to Lei Yue Mun, is Yau Tong Bay, also named Kwun Tong Tsai Wan. It was long considered a remote and sparsely populated area. In fact it was up to the early 1950s.

German's Imprisoned in La Salle College in 1939 - Anyone have photos?

Submitted by Keith Alverson on

My grandfather was imprisoned on September 3rd 1939 in an internment camp for german civilians who were living in Hong Kong at the time. He writes in his memoir that there were 'over 100' Germans imprisoned there roughly half Jewish.  He was let go with all other Jews and non Nazi party members after approximately one month in the camp. Does anyone have a photo of this camp or the people in it? Or indeed any information about it. Thanks in advance.
