Skyline of Shenzhen from Hong Kong

Submitted by catherine.anne… on

Hello all, I’m looking for archival images that capture the skyline of Shenzhen, ideally taken from the Lok Ma Chau neighborhood of Hong Kong in the 1980s, 1990s or early 2000s. Does anyone have a set of images that come to mind?

Thank you in advance for your help! Really anything that documents this changing border region would be a help...

Early petrol stations in Hong Kong

Submitted by Klaus on

The ExxonMobil HK website refers:

  • 1895: Vacuum Oil Co. opens an office on Duddell Street, Hong Kong
  • 1926: Socony’s first service station begins operation in Kowloon, Hong Kong
  • 1928: The first Socony gas station opens in Central, Hong Kong, using Mobil tradename

On the website, a photo of the Kowloon station is shown.

Unfortunately, the website does not give any exact locations. Any ideas?

Harry Ezekial Gubbay and family

Submitted by LAgood on

Hi, I m hoping I have done this correctly and terribly sorry to the admin team if not!

I'm trying to reach back into the Gubbay (possibly Sassoon Gubbay) family of which my grandfather was Harry Ezekial Gubbay, born in 1911 to David and Katie. The information we think we have identified so far:

Kate Seemah Sassoon Gubbay born around 1848 died 22/02/1926 wife of David Sassoon Gubbay (who we cannot locate anything concrete on, I'm aware there are a number of gentlemen of this name which may be why it is tricky)

Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination

Submitted by simtang on

The Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE, 香港中學會考) was a standardised examination between 1974 and 2011 after most local students' five-year secondary education, conducted by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA), awarding the Hong Kong Certificate of Education secondary school leaving qualification. The examination has been discontinued in 2012 and its roles are now replaced by the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education as part of educational reforms in Hong Kong. It was considered as the equivalent of the GCSE in the United Kingdom.

Visiting Shek Kwu Chau's old Roman baths

Submitted by hang_shan on

Shek Kwu Chau is a somewhat obscure island containing a drug rehab centre and, surprisingly, a Roman bath. All sources that I can find on this matter indicate that a permit is needed to visit the island, but I can find no other details about this permit's application process.

Does anyone have experience with visiting Shek Kwu Chau?
