Who, What, Where & When

Yau Yat Chuen - traffic control devices?

Submitted by Bails on

As a boy, in the early 1960's,  I recall being taken for walks by my Amah around Yau Yat Chuen. We were living on Argyle Street at the time. I vividly remember there being red-brick 'pyramids' in the roads of the quiet Yau Yat Chuen residential neighbourhood - which I think were to either prevent or slow traffic.

I am wondering whether Moddsey can find a supporting photo of these constructions, or whether anyone else can recall them being there, and what their purpose might have been?

Stonecutters Island Christenings

Submitted by gailps on

My parents were in the Royal Navy, stationed in Hong Kong in 1953-1955. I was born in Kowloon and christened on Stonecutters Island. I was presented with a silver egg cup & spoon  (Hong Kong silver), for being the 1st baby christened in the church and they had to make a font especially for me. Would there be any records of this kept anywhere?

Thanks

Traffic-Police Pagodas

Submitted by moddsey on

Thanks to regular contributor Moddsey for this compilation of photos showing the old Traffic-Police Pagodas through the years.

The first photo is from the 1920s. It shows the corner of Pedder Street and Queen's Road Central, with Wyndham (Flower St) on the left. Note the Chinese policeman with the black and white traffic stave (2 1/2 feet long). Traffic police were armed with traffic staves for the first time on 21 November 1922 for the pupose of signalling traffic to halt at busy road junctions. (Source: HK Daily Press 22 November 1922).

Aerial photographs of Hong Kong

Submitted by Den Ward on

During my visit to Hong Kong in 1989 I obtained temporary membership to the China Fleet Club. When in the club shop I purchased calenders for the years 1988, 1989 and 1990 because they were entitled Above Hong Kong and each contained twelve superb aerial views of Hong Kong. Do anyone know if this series continued after 1990, and if so for how many years, and do you know if these calenders are collector items. The 1988 calander was produced by Odyssey Productions and printed byWishing Printing Company Ltd. Hong Kong.

Paterson Street

Submitted by Bruce Chan on

Does anyone know who Paterson Street in Causeway Bay was named after?  A number of streets in that area were named after Jardines' taipans.  The two possibilities I have in mind are: William Paterson and his son John Johnstone Paterson -- but which one I don't know for sure.
