Upgrade to zoom viewer

Submitted by Admin on

I've just upgraded the viewer that we use to zoom in on photos. I've noticed three benefits:

1. Zoom in closer

The old version let us zoom in til the resolution of the image matches the resolution of your screen. The new version lets you zoom in further. Of course we're not really getting any more detail as that depends on the image file. But with a sharp photo I find it does help to be able to zoom in further, especially when looking at writing.

2. Bookmark and share your view

Chinese photographers in Hong Kong, 1844-1879

Submitted by Bennett on

The following text and images originally appeared as chapter 6 of "History of Photography in China: Chinese Photographers 1844-1879", published by Bernard Quaritch in 2013. (Click here for more information about the book and how to order.) This is Volume 3 of Terry Bennett's work on China's photo history. They are reproduced here with the kind permission of the author and publisher.

Submitted by lucysheen on

Hello

I'm interested to hear from anyone who might have informaiton and or pictures of what Austin Avene and the surrounding area looked like in the early 1960s. I am a foundling who was left on the stairwell of number 9 Austin avenue that "block" when last I visited back in 2012 was offices and a night club

But I would love to know more about that area what was there where the local police station might have been

Many thanks

Looking for historic spaces for a photographic installation

Submitted by jstreep on

hi, I am looking for a space to install a photographic installation in HK of anAmerican photographer. Previous installations have been in an unused pumping station in London and an abandoned train station in Singapore. Large open space not open to the weather. I know HK is very difficult to find space in but I thought the folks that visit this amazing site understand more about the "inside" of HK.

What brought me here was a comment on a site regarding the old State Theatre - pretty sure that space is not possible but I wanted to put it out there.

people and pictures from late 1920-30s

You have already helped me with my inquiries about Kenneth Kingsley Staple and his wife Joan (my grandmother), also my great-Aunt Isa Warbrick (as has Barbara Anslow.) I have found various pictures of family and their friends from that time and wonder how best to post them in case they ring any bells with anyone. I am still laboriously trying to piece together their story in HK.

Time Ball

Submitted by stephenD on

I'm tracking down as much as I can about the period during which Hong Kong had a time ball. The mechanized wonders existed from 1.1.1885 until the time ball service was discontinued on 30.6.1933. I have images (though would welcome more) for it at pretty regular intervals from its first installation at the old Water Police Station in Tsim Sha Tsui until its demise when it was on Signal/Blackhead's Hill.

Asking for help

Submitted by Admin on

In the plans for 2016 I wrote:

Ask for help with running costs

A good friend asked if anyone had ever offered to help with the running costs. I said yes, but that I'd politely refused. My friend tells me I'm stupid!

So, as the site gets bigger and costs rise, I'll ask if any regular visitors to Gwulo would like to make a small contribution to help with the running costs. I haven't decided how to do this yet, but Patreon looks like it could help.
