co-bury

Submitted by almal on

Hi, I am currently obtaining permission from FEHD to co-bury my mums ashes in her brothers grave in happy valley.

The problem is getting someone from the list provided by FEHD to carry out the service, co-bury/lay small plaque.

I am coming to hong kong with relevant paperwork on may 6th, and was hoping with permission granted within 5 days i could arrange co--bury on the friday 10th may.

Time is closing in and i have not managed to get a approved stone mason for the job.

Does anyone have any contacts or ideas as to what i could try.

Many thanks

Searching for second source on indigenous languages/ Cantonese in schools post- WW2?

Dear Gwulo community,

I found the below passage in an Al Jazeera article on the decline of indigenous languages in HK. I'm interested to know if anyone knows of a secondary source for the closing of village schools and formalisation of Cantonese in education? Thank you to the users of this forum who have such wide resources! Emma

“Gwulo’s Farewell”- illustrated talk

Submitted by Admin on

Before we leave Hong Kong in July I'd like to give one last talk, looking at some of the highlights of running Gwulo since I posted my first page about Hong Kong's history back in 2006.

I'll show some of my favourite photos and tell their tales, and we'll revisit some of the other stories which Gwulo has been involved with that I've found most memorable. I'll also take us on a quick whistle-stop tour of how the website has changed over the years.

We've booked two theatres that have sharp projectors and tiered seating, so that everyone gets a clear view of the photos:

Colonial Cemetery Reburials in 1961

Submitted by howzend on

I was recently shown a newspaper clipping from the Jewish Chronicle, dated March 31, 1961 (p. 22), that said that the HK government planned to clear 108 graves in the Colonial Cemetery in order to allow further burials to take place. The article goes on to say that the list (of who is getting dug up) is available for viewing at the HK Government Office in Trafalgar Square.

Is anyone aware of this? Any ideas where the list would be today?
