John Hubert BOTTOMLEY (aka Jack) [1899-1964]

John Hubert Bottomley (Jack) was born in Baildon, West Yorkshire in 1899, the oldest of four children of Fred Bottomley and Elizabeth Tyson.   As a young man Jack served in World War I and was gassed as well as receiving serious shrapnel wounds in Flanders. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

After the Great War he studied engineering at Bradford Technical College (now Bradford University).  He passed the Oxbridge exams but the family could not afford to send him to Oxford or Cambridge.

Richard ROTHWELL [1821-1895]

I am a distant cousin of Richard Rothwell. He lived in Canton China from 1845 until 1857, making two short visits to England in 1851 and 1856. He was a clerk working for Jamieson, Howe, & Co. in the tea trade. His brother Thomas Rothwell was a tea merchant in Shanghai from 1855 until 1883. From 1862 until the brancruptcy in 1876 he traded under the name Rothwell, Love & Co. together with his partner Joseph Love jun.

"Captain White was one of two officers who for 12 months ran an evasion and intelligence post in western Kwangtung and for most of this time the post was isolated behind the enemy lines.  In May 1944 a sudden enemy invasion of the area necessitated a rapid evacuation of the post and the safety of the Chinese staff and all our records on that occasion was solely due to the bravery and cool-headedness of Captain White.  With the Chinese officials in a panic and amidst torrential summer rains, Captain White moved the whole party away 20 miles to safety and then im­mediately set up ov

Dorothy Elizabeth Darkin née Davies (born sometime between April and June 1931) was married to a Rick Darkin (I think maybe Richard Eric son of Norman Darkin?) who was a Superintendent in the RHKP in Mongkok, Kowloon at the time of her death. We believe she had left the UK for New Zealand as a nurse in the late 1950s before ending up in HK. She had two sons (Angus and Rodney) who would have been born in the 1960s. The last known address was in Broadcast Drive, Kowloon.
