John Livingstone McPherson was a missionary with the Canadian Presbyterian Church whose life’s work was developing the YMCA movement in Hong Kong from 1905 to 1935.
Agnes Mary LOSSIUS (née POTTER) [1855-1938]
Agnes Mary Potter Lossius is buried in the Hong Kong Cemetery together with her husband. The gravestone is inscribed:
In/ loving memory/ of/ Helen Maud Potter/ born in Liverpool, England/ died in Hongkong/ 14th February 1914/Agnes Mary Potter Lossius/ July 23rd 1938/Captain I. J. Lossius/ died 16 Feb. 1942#10064 #8004 #9767
She was sister to Marion Potter.
Mary Prichard MOLINE (née MOLINE (NEVER MARRIED)) [1898-1986]
Mary Prichard Moline, missionary in China - was she interned in Hong Kong or Shanghai?
Mary was English, the sister of Robin Moline, Archbishop of Perth. I have no knowledge of her between her arrival in Hong Kong in 1940 and 1946 when she left China via the port of Chinqangtao in northern China.
It is possible she travelled to Shanghai prior to Japanese occupation and practised her missionary work there until she was captured and interned. Following are possibilities of where she was held.
Matthew NATHAN [1862-1939]
Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Matthew Nathan GCMG PC (Ire) was a British soldier and colonial administrator who variously served as the governor of Sierra Leone, Gold Coast, Hong Kong, Natal and Queensland.
In 1903, Nathan was appointed (as the 13th) Governor of Hong Kong (Chinese name: 弥敦), a position he would serve from 29 July 1904 – 29 July 1907. During his tenure, Nathan made use of his engineering background to establish a central urban planning and reconstruction policy.
Reginald Edward STUBBS [1877-1947]
Sir Reginald Edward Stubbs GCMG (Chinese: 司徒拔) was a British colonial administrator who served as governor of four British territories during his career. He was the 16th Governor of Hong Kong from 30 September 1919 – 1 November 1925.
During Stubbs' tenure, strikes were frequent, including ones that were very damaging to the Hong Kong economy, such as the Seamen's strike of 1922 and the Canton-Hong Kong strike that began in 1925.
Jill DOGGETT [1912-1999]
Born in 1912, Jill Doggett was a well-known Hong Kong journalist and champion for social justice who worked for the South China Morning Post from 1953 to 1974.
