William CAINE [1799-1871]

Dates of birth & death given by Christopher Munn in the Dictionary of Hong Kong Biography.

He was Hong Kong's first Chief Magistrate. He founded Hong Kong's Police force, and had several other important roles in Hong Kong's government between 1841 and his retirement (and departure from Hong Kong) in 1859.

I'm looking for an image of him to include in the JCCPS project. Has anyone seen one? Photos may not be available, so sketches / engravings / cartoons / paintings are also welcome.

George MERRIMAN [1901-1969]

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum, but have been enjoying the site for several weeks.

I'm researching the activities of my father, George Merriman, who was interned in Stanley from the fall of HK until liberation. He told us very little of his memories, probably because he was Deputy Head of Station for Hong Kong MI6, serving under Alec Summers. He would have felt restrained by the Official Secrets Act, I suspect. (I met Alec Summers when he came to NZ to visit Dad in about 1960...)

John Black's list gives his occupation in 1941 as "Clerk in Holy Orders", the official title for a clergyman in the Church of England.

Barbara Anslow:

Rev Cyril Brown, very popular on Stanley stage, also known for his kindness and help  to fellow internees.
